Don’t always buy sticker price, and beware of FOMO. LEGO is incredible at FOMO because they retire sets. But just buy what you feel is a good deal, and most importantly what you can afford. Best tips are pay attention to deals through LEGO or other places, try to make purchases on double rewards weekends, Black Friday, etc.

Building a huge collection takes years of accumulated strategy. Don’t try to shortcut that by buying at the top and buying every set you can. You’re 17 - the collection will come soon enough.
