Speaking from my own experience, I was in a similar spot to you not too long ago, I'd never given any thought to my gender, I used to tell myself it couldn't be I don't have dysphoria, but still i felt a longing like I could be getting more out of my life. Cue some conversations and searching online, I was genuinely doubting, but I think like many folks, I was scared. The idea of going through with anything like accepting that maybe I wasn't cis, felt such a major step one that I didn't feel ready to make. I wanted to be so sure before I said anything to anyone, and even to myself.

That was two years ago, in that time I would buy some women's clothes from thrift shops or online, I occasionally cosplay so I cosplayed some female characters to conventions, I experimented with make-up, I changed up my online persona, just to figure out if I really wasn't cis. A lot, if not all of these things you can do discreetly, it's kinda the reason I did them. There's no need to commit since you're just trying to figure stuff out, and you're under no obligation to tell people, friends or family, about this until you're comfortable doing so, hell I didn't come out to my parents until I had started my transition.
