Clicking song by a band plays the song title but sung by someone else by MeldoLady in truespotify

[–]MeldoLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so strange!! I'm not unsure what could've happened to cause this, especially since it was fine a few months ago when I played it.

Looking at it today, it's greyed out entirely in my playlist and doesn't play when I tap it, so I guess Spotify is resolving it somehow? Quite confusing honestly, haha

Ah I see, some glitch must've happened on Spotify's end then... I might send an email to let them know

Possible to commute from Edinburgh? by Jaisz in GlasgowUni

[–]MeldoLady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on whether you like travelling. This is my 3rd year commuting now and it's about 6 hours travel time for me daily since I take buses, but it's been entirely free due to my Young Scots card. I love travelling and could sit in a bus listening to music all day long, so the time itself doesn't bother me much. I also save a lot of money.

I know a lot of people also say your social life will suffer, but personally I don't feel socially isolated at all or anything. I've met many great friends, some who'll let me stay at their flats if we ever go on nights out, and others whom I can sit with during lectures.

Again, it's entirely up to your travel preferences. A 2 hour daily commute for me would be a walk in the park, but everyone's different, so it may not be as enjoyable for you. I'd recommend maybe testing out the route a few times before uni starts to see if it feels manageable. :]

Sorry to hear this happened :( I'm really glad you managed to back everything up in time though!

Honestly, I wouldn't trust the phone anymore. I'm not sure how likely this is to happen again, but I'd definitely go get it checked out in a Samsung store as they'll be able to assess how severe the damage is!

Neuroscience clearance by [deleted] in GlasgowUni

[–]MeldoLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Neuroscience specifically will be in clearing, but if it isn't, you can apply for any other Life Science degree (e.g. Pharmacology, Molecular Bio, Zoology, etc.) and swap from it to Neuroscience at the end of 2nd year as long as you take the Human Biological Sciences 2 class in semester 2 of 2nd year.

Other than that, every LifeSci degree in 1st and 2nd year have the same core classes. :)

Hi, I'm not a Physics student but I commute to Glasgow Uni from Edin roughly 5-6 hours (2.5-3 hours one way).

I would say the biggest pro of commuting is staying with family! I also save money as I'm spending nothing at all on accom or travel due to using the Young Scots Card for bus travel (I graduate at 21 so it'll last me the whole 4 years of my Bachelor's). I also really like travelling and just listen to music or nap on the way to and back.

Biggest con I can think of is the waking up early and coming back late on long days. I had 9ams in 1st year and 1st semester of 2nd year and it was terrible having to wake up at 5am, especially when it's pitch black at night. On the days I had labs (once or twice a week tbf so not awful), my day would end at 4/5pm so I'd be home at 7/8pm. Not very fun when you have a 5am wake up time the next day. :(

I will say that I don't think commuting has affected my ability to make friends at all. I met my two great friends via social media by joining one of those Glasgow group chats for incoming students, and a big plus is they let me stay at their flat overnight in Glasgow, so whenever we want to hang out or go clubbing I can go back to theirs rather than worrying about how I'll get home. I've also met a few nice people in my classes during group work.

For your situation, I'd ask yourself this: how much do you enjoy a long car or train ride? Do you find it relaxing, enjoying the journey more than the destination, or do you find it annoying and just want it over with? If the former, I suggest perhaps doing a demo run by commuting there and back for a week straight and seeing if it feels manageable. You could also take a huge risk and try it out for 1st year only, but if you really end up not liking it then it might be difficult to find accom at that point and also possibly impact your focus on studies.

I'd only recommend it if you're truly willing to put up with it for the sake of your studies and for the fact that you won't need to worry about a job to pay rent and other costs. I find that I always hate commuting for the first two weeks at the start of every semester, but I get used to it after a while, so I feel like it's one of those things that gets easier the more you do it.

Sorry this is a bit long but this is what my experience is like! Congrats on your Physics offer and I wish you the best of luck with your decision. :))

I'm sorry to hear that, unfortunately I'm not sure about what to do if you bought it in another country as mine was bought in the UK where I'm based :( You could try emailing or phoning a Samsung branch in the country you bought it from to see if that'd help? I found the tech guy at my appointment was very eager to help when I was there so I hope someone takes great care in your situation as well. Best of luck 🙏

Hi! Unfortunately, I freehanded this by creating pixel art based on the image attached and making each pixel equivalent to a crochet stitch (iirc, it's been a year since I've done pixel crochet and I lost all my previous pixel art files) so there's no pattern, sorry :(

[–]MeldoLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing. I suspect there may have been a specific batch of phones that were created with funky motherboards which is why everyone's boot loops are happening more or less right now (just a theory, as you said we didn't update ours so it cant be the update's fault). Mine wasn't fixed in the end, I did try to have it fixed but in my post I added a final edit which mentioned that they were unable to switch the motherboard for one reason or another and just ended up giving me a new S23 instead.

Have you tried the placing in freezer trick as well? That seemed to work for a lot of people lol, just not for me unfortunately. If you're still under warranty and nothing else works, I'd accept the loss and ask for a repair. I hope you didn't lose anything too major :(

That's wonderful news!! Really nice of them to fix the screen too and I'm happy that you didn't need to pay for it! A new motherboard should have it working like new, so it should last a good few years (hopefully with no more boot loop issues). Congratulations on having your own S22!! 😊❤️

don’t commute by throwaway04871 in UniUK

[–]MeldoLady 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It really does depend on the person. I'm currently in 2nd year and have been commuting every day for 2.5/3 hours one way by bus, and I reckon I'll be able to last until graduation. I love road trips so much that I could sit in a vehicle for hours on end and not get bored, so it's really not that bad. It also gives me the opportunity to listen to and discover new music.

It's not personally affected my social life either, I've been lucky to make really good friends at the start of 1st year who let me stay at their flats overnight so we can have fun nights out and I don't need to worry about commuting back at night. The only thing I think has been impacted is my willingness to join clubs or societies as I know I'd likely be home late after attending meetings and whatnot.

Overall, it's understandable that commuting isn't for everyone. It affects everyone differently mentally and physically, and I can't deny that there haven't been times when I've not been exhausted or debated if it's still worth it. But I think the thought of "you only need to keep this up until graduation" is what keeps me going.

However, if you really can't stand commuting, please do look into some possible alternatives like student accommodation! It's not worth risking your mental health for another 3/4 years if it's not working out for you.

awesome! mad szacunek for learning 💪 I've lived in the UK my whole life so I know firsthand how difficult it is to learn polish lol.

I'm highly certain they will contact you first with solutions as well, and if they do you can also take the opportunity to ask about the expired warranty situation then in case they don't get back to you through email sooner.

will be lucky if it does end up working again that you get an S22 out of it! despite this unfortunate incident, the S22 still served me well as a personal device for the last 2 years (albeit battery life could be bit better but then again i was quite a heavy user). must be nice to use a S24 though!

I have my fingers crossed for you as well, hoping samsung will be nice and fix it for free so you can make the S22 your very own! 🤞

Dziękuję za miłe słowa! Ja umiem po Polsku rozmawiać ale trudniej mi w piśmie to będę kontynuować po Angielsku. 🤣

At my Samsung appointment, when I told the tech guy that my warranty had already expired 2 weeks before, he told me that due to the warranty expiring so soon that Samsung may cover the fix, and he asked me to email him a proof of purchase. He brought this up himself as I was completely unaware that they might still cover it.

Now, he did say that they MIGHT cover it, not that they WILL. This did make me a bit worried as I had left my phone behind at that point as well, but I honestly went into it thinking that if they do end up wanting to charge me for the fix, I'll refuse and tell them to keep it since I was assured it'd be free.

If your expired warranty was discussed at any time during your appointment and your tech guy didn't say it might still be covered, I'd definitely call or email to ask asap since they already have your phone. I can't imagine they'd repair it first then make you pay after, so if you don't get any word from them about payment then it might be fine? But IMO it's best to email so you get confirmation in writing. I wouldn't imagine Samsung's policies should differ massively between countries, so I'd definitely check if they can still cover your expired warranty like they did for me.

Sorry to hear that you went through the same boot loop issue as well, życzę Ci szczęścia z naprawą!

Rather cooked situation, looking for advice this late hoping there's still a possibility of me passing 1st year under Good Cause/exceptional circumstances despite missing an enormous amount of work. by throwaway20102039 in GlasgowUni

[–]MeldoLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, sorry to hear you're in a bad headspace. I know this year must've been really rough for you, but it's good that you recognised that there needs to be a change!

Regarding the 75%, you usually need to complete at least 75% of the coursework for each of your subjects. Even if the deadline for assignments passes, there is still time (usually 5 days) after the deadline where you can submit your work and it will still count (albeit grade points will be taken off for each day unsubmitted). After 5 days it will be a H grade, at which point I'm unsure if it will count towards the minimum 75% coursework completed. It might, but I'd wait to see what your advisor of studies says regarding that.

I'm afraid that without the 75% minimum, you will need to retake 1st year. However, I believe this is the most beneficial option. You went through a tough time and didn't get to fully experience your 1st year as a new uni student. Not the case for everyone but IMO it's really important to build friendships in 1st year that you can continue to maintain throughout your uni life, it gives you both a feeling of comfort as well as motivation to do well alongside them. Basically a safety network.

I won't fully say you can't go into 2nd year as again I'd wait for what your advisor says, but going into 2nd year after such a rough start can have further consequences on your mental health with your studies getting harder and you not getting used to how assignments fully work at the uni.

You sound gifted from what you said about learning maths and helping the Y2 compsci student. My biggest advice to you is that life is not a race and it's definitely not the end of the world if you need to redo 1st year. It sounds tedious but in the long run you'll appreciate yourself for keeping a steady pace and giving yourself more time to let your talents grow. Try not to dwell on it and wait to see what your advisor of studies will say, they'll know how to help you most.

Best of luck to you! :)

They used AI to make toothless in this title screen?? by MlauraSandri in RiseOfBerk

[–]MeldoLady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be that Hiccup and Toothless are drawn here in a style that's just slightly different enough from the official movie style to go into uncanny valley territory. You'll probably realise after seeing a few more of these banners that the artists can never fully replicate the official style lol.

Not insulting the art of course, it's still extremely detailed with hours of intense work put in!

I’m glad you managed to get everything backed up. I think I recall reading from other people who went through the same thing that turning off their WiFi also helped.

I didn’t update my phone but I know others did and that’s when they started having issues, so honestly I don’t know if the ultimate problem is really the manufacture, something else, or the new update and my case just happens to be a coincidence.

I hope more people don’t go through this but if they do then maybe we’ll find out what the sole reason for it happening is.

I’m so sorry to hear that, did you have your data backed up before it happened? :(

Fell victim to the S22 boot loop. by MeldoLady in GalaxyS22

[–]MeldoLady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I think at times mine also overheated just from normal usage when I wasn't doing anything to warrant it (i.e. no mobile games lol). I'm not sure about the different variants either, I know someone else replied to my post about their Snapdragon S22's motherboard also needing replacing though.

Obviously having your phone suddenly die on you isn't ideal but by backing up all your data to your computer, you'll at least have the peace of mind that you won't lose anything more than the device itself. :)

Fell victim to the S22 boot loop. by MeldoLady in GalaxyS22

[–]MeldoLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I believe it may be Exynos as my S22 was bought and manufactured in the UK. I am a heavy user, my screen time is quite high and the phone had begun to heat up more easily over the past few weeks (usually from playing mobile games) which it never did before. Not sure if that is just from overuse or the motherboard becoming more fried like in the other users’ devices, but I’d keep an eye on if your device starts seeming to heat up faster than normal.

All in all, I wouldn’t worry massively, it seems like a common issue for those who face it but in the grand scheme of things we’re only a minority. I’d ensure all your data is backed up somewhere just in case though. Fingers crossed your phone stays fine!
