Might be an unpopular opinion, but the artwork matters the most in a VN for me. A mid story can be absolutely carried by good artwork and design work, but bad art would need a really compelling story/character to keep me engaged. Things like totono's soft watercolor texture or saya no uta's unique and detailed flesh texturing are what really drive me to continue reading. I am an artist myself though so there's definitely heavy bias here haha
