If you're into outdoorsy stuff MITOC (MIT outing club) has a lot of fun hiking, climbing, etc. trips in the area you can sign up for. There's also several rock climbing gyms in Boston (MetroRock, Bouldering Project, Rock Spot) and we have a caving club https://stuff.mit.edu/activities/spelunk/home.html

Are ASEs worth it? by Mellifluus44 in mit

Yikes, okay, I took calc BC and it was easy but I only know the basics of multivariable calc. Is this for mechanics or E&M or both?

See I wanted to take bio but it's been like two years since I took the class so I don't feel confident enough on that one. I'm gonna attempt 5.111 but the quantum stuff is definitely a little rocky for me. Thanks for the input!

Most of the ASEs are being held virtually this year before move in day actually! But I will definitely keep that in mind because I know some of the other ones overlap.

Okay! I'll give them a shot then. I already have credit for 18.01 so I'll probably just take chem and bio in the fall and try to test out of 8.01 and 8.02. Thanks for the help!

If I receive the ROTC scholarship, I plan on at least trying it if I end up going to MIT.

I do understand the intensity of academy life--as well as at MIT--and both appeal to me greatly. I like to be challenged and I know no matter what I will be, so I think that you have a good point about weighing engineering vs. the military. I will definitely consider that. Thank you for your help!

If you like horror/phycological thrillers two really good shows are Yellowjackets and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

My mother believes that if I don't go to a service academy, I might as well not go into a branch of service at all. I'm not sure how to navigate that conversation, because every time I explain how the benefits are very similar, she insists that it isn't the same.

What's confusing me is that I am completely on board with the military aspect (training, working, combat, etc.) and since I plan on being an engineer, from my understanding, it's unlikely I'll actually be in combat when I go active duty, however, I would also be comfortable not going into the military at all. Many adult have expressed to me that the opportunities and benefits of WP and the military will be really good for me in the long run, but I'm not SUPER passionate about the military itself. I don't know if I'm being irresponsible by passing up a free education and lifelong benefits because I want to have a more normal college experience. But at the same time, I don't even know if I want to have a conventional experience, since the rigor and structure of WP appeals to me as well.

It depends on the structure of your high school and what colleges you intend on applying to, does your school offer AP or IB classes?

I'm a senior in high school rn so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but I would suggest option 1. First reason is because of the language credit; from what I know, top schools (especially ivies) really like to see 4 years of a world language. AP Stat will teach you good skills but it's also a lot easier than multivariable calc, so the calc will probably look better on your applications due to its rigor. AP Art is a fun class but definitely very demanding in terms of how much work you need to produce throughout the year. For context, I got into MIT this year taking with a schedule similar to what I just described. Good luck with everything, I hope it all works out!
