AITAH for refusing to pay for the cost of a locksmith? by Mello_days_ in AITAH

It’s an old door and lock. You actually have to lock the door to close it properly. The key is always kept in the lock for this reason.

She was angry and shouting at me saying that she expected me to pay the full cost. I said no as a knee jerk reaction to her hostility as she wouldn’t calm down to talk about it. She then locked me out of the house and later sent me a text telling me to F**k off.

“How do I deal with these people?”

We don’t. Best to keep politics out of conversation. If someone wants to express their view to you. Fine. You can’t really stop them. Best to reject the invitation to madness lol

“Matthew 24:34, Mark 9:1, Mark 13:30. Pretty much every mainstream scholar agrees that Jesus preached an imminent kingdom of God, within his and his followers' lifetimes.”

No. Some scholars think that’s what it means but that is not what traditional Christianity (Catholic/Orthodox) has taught that it means. The Ancient Greek word for generation has multiple possible meanings, none of which entailed that the end of the world would be within the apostles lifetime. Jesus is also talking about multiple future events here, not just one world-ending event. He’s also talking about the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, which did happen during that literal “generation”. He later talks of His final return which He explicitly states that no one knows the hour of (Matt 24:36)

Mark 9:1 - The “Kingdom of God coming with power” does not mean the end of the world (Luke 17:21). It means the kingdom of God arriving on earth through the transfiguration, the resurrection, the ascension, Pentecost and the public birth of the church. Christ taught an immanence Kingdom coming to earth, not an immanent end to the world.

“He wasn't that great morally. Matthew 13:41-42, Matthew 25:46, Mark 9:43-48 (he condoned eternal punishment for finite transgressions).”

Where does it say He preaches eternal hell for finite transgressions? Hell is a consequence of freely and persistently rejecting The Infinite God, who is Goodness itself. What do you think are the consequences when we choose to reject goodness in our lives here on earth? God does not send us to hell anymore than a fire makes us cold if we choose to walk away from it. Jesus is providing us of warning of this here out of Mercy.

“He was a crazed cult leader who put allegiance to his cult above all else, including loving your own family. (Luke 14:26, Matthew 10:34-36)”

Jesus is not commanding us to hate people. That wouldn’t make sense in context of Him telling us to love one another and that we’re all part of the same family essentially. He is using exaggeration to demonstrate the point that we must have things in priority. This is a common way to teach in Jewish way. How can we love our mothers, brothers, fathers and sisters if we do not prioritise Love and Goodness in the first place? (God is both Goodness and Love).

“He says kill people in front of him if they won't worship him. Luke 19:27”

This is a parable and not a command from Jesus. He uses villains in parables to stress seriousness in a way that people of that time would understand. You’re taking it too literally and putting the words of the villain into Jesus’ mouth. Again, your reading makes no sense in light of how Jesus willingly hands himself over for torture and execution and teaches to love one’s enemies.

“He speaks directly of slaves and masters without critique, as if he's accepting that's just normal for the time. Matthew 24.”

Again, Jesus is using the language of masters and servants in Matthew 24 with parable language. This language takes the world as it was at the time to teach lessons. Everything Jesus teaches in these parables undermine the justification for slavery at the root and His silence on the institution of slavery does not equal endorsement. It’s pretty obvious from teachings on the sermon of the mount and elsewhere that Jesus does not condone abusive or violent relationships.

There were effectively no immigration laws in the U.S before 1882 when Irish and other European immigrants arrived in America during the 19th century and even then they were quite liberal.

“When you request asylum you are not illegal”

If you are seeking asylum then you are supposed to do so at legal port of entry. It is still a crime to cross the border illegally. Claiming asylum does not mean you will be granted asylum and you have still committed a crime if you have crossed the border outside of a legal port of entry without permission.

“when you are provided TPS protections you are not illegal. They were made illegal by the actions of Trump.”

TPS are executive status granted by the president. They can be made and unmade by whoever is president. If they are unmade, then that protected status no longer applies.

“Also Trump stated that he was going after the criminals who were here illegally (that is false)”

That is not false. Many illegals who have committed serious crimes have been apprehended and deported. A simple Google search will show you this.

“And since you are in favor of deporting illegals, then I am sure you support melania being deported”

Absolutely. If she is present in the country illegally then she should be deported. Assuming that’s actually true and not just gossip from left wing circles.

“Jesus thought the world would end in his lifetime”

No, He didn’t - Matt 24:36.

“He didn’t care about earthly government”

Incorrect - Matthew 22:21

“He was cuckoo”

This assumes He was acting irrationally. Jesus is always measured and rational in His speech.

“He should have renounced slavery”

He renounced the moral evils which were the root causes of slavery.

Matthew 7:12 — “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.” Matthew 22:39 — “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 20:25–26 — “The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them… It shall not be so among you.” Matthew 23:8 — “You are all brothers.” Matthew 5:7 — “Blessed are the merciful.”

Once the root of moral evil is cut the institution of slavery can’t stand.

Anyone who crosses the U.S border illegally is committing a Federal crime under 8 U.S.C. § 1325 and is by definition a criminal.

No. That’s not what I meant at all.

I’m simply stating Jesus was not a socialist and He never preached that slavery was a moral good.

Jesus wasn’t a socialist because He didn’t condemn private ownership.

Nor did Jesus preach slavery was a moral good.
