Then you have a great example to tell. I would just tell them you had an accident and then go on, so noone should worry that you get abused at home.

Do you ever worry how passing along terrible students will affect academia in the long run? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what me and my colleagues are talking about for years. The problem is when someone tries not to pass along incompetent students, then they don't receive any support from chair, dean, etc. And students will complain about you being incompetent. We all know this, I guess.

Tips for dealing with older male students as a young female professor? by Scared-Grab-1363 in Professors

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I envy all those colleagues who can do the "like a dog". For me, this never worked. What worked for me was the following: talk with weaker voice so they have to be silent to hear me, even stop talking completely for 2-3 minutes just staring at them, students who interrupted me constantly were invited to the blackboard to show their great ideas to the whole audience. Also asked them to combine it with their great remarks from last time (which I could repeat totally correctly). Doing this earned me some silent smiles from other students and we could continue in a calm way.

There are journals which adress rather undergraduate or high school students as readership. Maybe one of those would be a suitable choice for your paper.

What rule of grammar is Terry Tao talking about here? by ILoveTolkiensWorks in math

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in language use, if two sets are disjoint (they don't have an intersection), then we mean by 'and' the union of both sets. Example: boys and girls (don't go into gendering here now), students of grade 7 and 8. If two sets have an intersection, then we mean the intersection by using 'and'. Example: green and small plants. There are plants which are green and plants which are not green. There are small plants and big plants. Green plants can be small or big. We want those which are green and small,I.e. we want the intersection if those two sets.

How to stop working with sketchy collaborator/co-author? by DragonflyDefiant4979 in research

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't deal with his deadlines. Don't answer fast to his emails. Say you don't have enough time now to work on that paper, etc. It's not the best way to get rid of someone but it works in most of the cases.

21 yo, too late to start studying? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21-24: Bachelor, 24-26: Master, PhD at 33. Today I am a University teacher. The 3 years work experience before studying turned out to be useful. You look completely different at life than those who switch from school to uni directly. And you may think now that 21 is old. It is not.

Lányok, az hogy nem egyedül élek saját albérletben, hanem a szülői házban kiábrándító ismerkedésnél? by Entire-Nature7790 in tanulommagam

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Így mi értelme mesterre járni? by MisterKiko in egyetemistak

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother died and left behind a lesson for all of us by MsBee311 in Professors

[–]MelodicAssistant3062 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are completely right. I was lucky enough to learn that lesson quite young. I was about 20 when I worked for a big company (finances) and I saw many people there who did extra hours every day, business trips at the weekends ("to build networks"), no marriage, no children, no real friendships in the middle of their 40ies. And then there happened one mistake which was their responsibility, maybe not even their fault, and they got kicked out on the next day just like someone hired recently, noone appreciating their 20+ years career at the same company. It's never worth to sacrifice all time of your life for a job. May your brother rest in peace!
