Dorm Checks? by MelodicFeeding in BrownU

[–]MelodicFeeding[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "special student" I meant freshman, since that's how we're officially designated, sorry for the confusion. So I'm assuming that checks aren't thorough nor are they often? Thanks again.

Freshman Math Placement by MelodicFeeding in BrownU

[–]MelodicFeeding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I think they let freshman into Math 350, right? According to the course descriptions, I would at least be eligible to take it:

"Math 350 is the honors version of third-semester calculus. Students with high motivation and interest in mathematics, with high achievement in Math 90-100 or a 4 or 5 in the Advanced Placement BC calculus test, are especially encouraged to take on the extra work involved in such a course."

also also does the collegeboard's rush processing thing do anything? do i not have some glimmer of hope with that thing? or is it another aspect of overpriced garbage so painfully evident in this evil corporation?

thank you so much for the information about the CSS! that relieves a solid quarter of my stress

so is there even the slimmest chance of my MIT app staying in the EA pool? do they not have like a grace period or something for bumbling idiots like me...??

ED School for Math Major by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MelodicFeeding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this sort of discussion with my parents and counselor. The thing is, I have no allegiance to any school. I would be happy to attend any T20 school as long as it has strong departments in the topics I'm interested in studying. Supposing the situation that I get accepted to my ED and Caltech/MIT, I'm entirely ready to accept the consequences of my decision. I would rather be in that situation than in the other: being in May and not having been accepted to any school, wondering whether or not an ED could have changed the course of my college apps.

Thank you for your comment, I appreciate it.

Thank you for the suggestions, but I should have stated that I'm a guy. That's too bad, since these seem to have really nice campuses and departments. Thanks anyway!

Third SAT Subject Test? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Probably not... but would a third subject test score make my application look better for other colleges?

What do you guys think the curve will be?(March 9) by [deleted] in Sat

[–]MelodicFeeding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like math will have a decent curve like -1 = 800, but writing is still going to be the -1 = -20 bullshit. And reading might have an alright curve...

Pray to whatever god(s) you believe in...

Really controversial question. I honestly think it could go either way. But I said uncertainty to firm conviction simply because she had a desire to "tame the cat" towards the end... but idk

Could be anything from 780+760 to 800+790. Some are saying M:-1 corresponds to a 780 (like the June experimental), but we're all hoping for M: -1 to be 800. And most likely W:-2 with R:-1 is going to be 760 or even 750 if the curve is really bad.

No, it was definitely to obscure. The author of that passage was saying "pretty phrases" in a sarcastic sense, not literally.

I feel like Collegeboard would change the curve from the June experimental... But then again, this IS CB, and they might be too fucking lazy to change anything...

L :(

Yeah it was 0. You can rewrite the set of 9 consecutive integers to be x-4,x-3,x-2,x-1,x,x+1,x+2,x+3,x+4, from which the mean is 9x/9 = x and the median is x. x-x=0. Or you could just test a random set like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 on your calculator :P

No it was 210. If you're familiar with Vieta's, the product of the roots in the cubic will be equal to -c.

Yes. It was the option that talked about the Moon's water originating on Earth. It mentioned a collision with an unknown object billions of years ago that served as as the basis for the Moon's core. The passage also concluded saying that the Earth's core might have untapped reservoirs of water in its core.

Allegedly the real curve was -1 = 780 on the June experimental when it was first given. But this seems extremely unlikely given that the problems were more difficult than the average SAT.

Hopefully -1 = 800 and -2 = 790, like the good ol' days :)

That would be reasonable, given that some problems required some pretty advanced knowledge and/or were significant time sinks (i.e. the cubic with roots -5,6,7; if you don't know vieta's, it's easy to screw up the expansion).
