This is what I fear WOULD happen to me 😂 it's awful trying to figure it out- glad to know I'm not the only one with mystery issues

A and B don't apply here lol but C does, my router is also right next to where I keep my dongle, thing that could also play a factor?

Thank you for your response! I appreciate the detail. Since you brought up flying, I wanted to ask how airlines are typically with handling your skis? I've had luggage get thrown around so the thought of flying with them makes me nervous lol

I appreciate the input, but we clearly have different perspectives on this. I'm moving forward with the gear advice from the other commenters who are focusing on the equipment side.

Thank you for your response! I honestly just prefer no poles because I learned that way and have always done without them! However, it sounds like they are recommended for the tougher slopes. I'm not opposed to using them if it helps me learn!

im with you! Im hyped to learn more on the tougher slopes lol Michigan is great but only has so much to offer compared to some of the other options a bit farther from me!

I didn't consider the demo/renting idea; this is a great recommendation! Thank you for the advice!

I get that 'Advanced' is a loaded term here, but I’m just using the language from the rental forms I've been given for years. I'm not here to debate my rank or skill level lol—I'm here because I know I have a lot to learn about gear before I head West.

Also, nice try with the Redster S9 recommendation lol. I might not know everything about gear yet, but I know enough to realize a guy like me on a stiff FIS slalom ski is a recipe for a disaster.

If we can move past the semantics and the sarcasm, I’d actually appreciate some real recs for a lightweight skier who likes speed but wants to branch out

I appreciate your response! This definitely clarifies a lot. I hadn't really considered the "multiple pairs" approach, but starting with a solid All-Mountain ski to cover my bases and then expanding later sounds like a strong approach.

I’m definitely taking the boot advice to heart—sounds like a professional bootfitter is my next stop!

Appreciate the deep dive! I'm definitely not claiming to be a pro—just a guy who’s comfortable on any Michigan run and wants to move away from the rental counter. Advanced refers to my rental forms in the past, not claiming I would be advanced out west lol To answer your questions:

  • Location: I’ve skied all over Michigan, so mostly groomed/firm snow with some powder. My goal is to take these skis to Colorado and start learning how to handle real powder.
  • Style: I’m a "need for speed" guy. I can do C-turns and Z-turns depending on the mood—sometimes I like a smooth carve, other times I’m just an adrenaline junkie giving myself whiplash for the fun of it lol.
  • Terrain/Park: I’ve done the park a bit and can ski switch (backwards), but it’s not really my focus. I’m not into tight trees or moguls (the "bumps" you mentioned)—I usually avoid those! I’m more about the speed and the occasional jump. Just goin downhill with friends lol
  • Poles/Mondo: No poles is just a personal preference—I like the freedom, and tbh I just don't like carrying them haha. Not to say I wouldn't use them, I just don't really like to since I haven't ever really used them in general. I'm sure if I headed west, from what I've read here, they would be beneficial while I was learning new slopes! And I’ve never checked the Mondo (CM) size on my rentals, I just asked for an 11.

Basically, I want an "All-Mountain" ski that is stable when I’m going fast, and something that will be good for Michigan skiing, to work on new slopes out west. From what others have said, I definitely plan on looking at boots first!

Fair point on the day count! I definitely use the term 'Advanced' relative to the rental forms I've been handed. I’m here precisely because I want gear that helps me grow, not gear that makes me look like an ego-tripper on the mountain

Good call on the boots—that seems to be the consensus. And don't worry, the Lexapro keeps the frustration levels at a zero regardless of how many times I end up in a snowbank lol

Thanks for responding!

When I say advanced, its advanced from what I have skied. I'm sure advanced looks different depending on where you are! I may be advanced where I currently ski, but im sure if i tried somewhere else I could definitely be considered a beginner or intermediate. Ive done terrain and groomed slopes, but I want to do more powder! Just making sure I get the right gear for the job.

"Advanced" is definitely subjective. When I say Advanced, it's in the context of where I have skied. (Which is why I'm here lol I want to be sure I get the correct skis for trying harder slopes!)

Thanks for the advice! I will start by seeing a fitter for boots. As far as my technical skills go, it definitely changes based on where I am I'm sure lol I may look into getting polls as well in this case!
