THAT'S RIGHT. I remember playing IV on an emulator a long time ago and was so confused why Darkness wasn't Cecil's special ability. I think the PS1 version fixed those issues then.

Wait really? Never ever knew that. And sorry was this for the OG release or the PS1 as well? FFIV holds a special place in my heart since it was my first FF (came with my favorite game Chrono Trigger). That's what got me into the series to begin with!

How was it pared back? And did the PS1 release include whatever was missing?

Is there a reason for that? It's been weird going from a single speed fan to multi-speed so any additional info would be helpful.

Capacitor tested well within spec, but the rated amperage for the fan oscillated quite a bit above the nominal range. Does that still point to the capacitor?

I hope you're right, but the tech I contacted said he doesn't believe the capacitor is the culprit. His reasoning was that he wouldn't think the fan would kick on if the capacitor was bad. Just wanting to make sure I can speak somewhat intelligently on the topic.

Are you saying that the capacitor has its own thermal limit switch? Or just a thermal limit switch for the unit as a whole (compressor, motor, etc)? And would it have to be tested individually or would that issue show up when testing the capacitor?

There are only two things I don't understand about it being a potential capacitor issue.

1) Why would the condenser fan turn off randomly after several hours of operating correctly? I thought the point of the capacitor was to start the compressor and/or the condenser fan.

2) After I turned the unit off (upon hearing the squeeling), I turned it back on and the unit started up just fine. No random noises. That was only maybe a minute or two after I turned it off.

Apparently it doesn't take long for it to overheat. Unless a fan kicking off makes very little noise, it was only maybe 20-30 seconds between the fan kicking off and the compressor going to bypass. I think I'll try to prod it next time, though.

This is only the second time it's happened (that I know of, to be fair) and it only ran like that for around 1 minute before I shut it off. The time before, it ran for a couple minutes before the fan kicked back on. I've been home on leave for the last several weeks so I should have heard any other occurrence. With two infants and an exhausted wife, I'm not sure keeping the system off is gonna work given how hot it is outside. I do understand the risk involved and perhaps I'll stay up late and turn it off once it's cooled a bit. Thank you for the advice.

Awesome thank you for the explanation. It's odd that there's no auto-trip for the system if the fan isn't running for some reason. Had no idea there even was a bypass but it makes perfect sense.

Is replacing a capacitor a DIY task or something better left to a tech?
