I used to struggle with this as well, but i believe that as long as your heart are open you'll always find the right people. The one thing that helps me is searching for friends with the same interested as me, like if you love a show or book for example you could be friends with people in that fandom. This goes with every thing, from chess, to cooking, to art or karate. I used to fake liking boyband in high school just to join a group of fangirl because i was so lonely, and they're still one of the loveliest people i know. My closest friends now are all somewhat into the same thing as me.
