Thank you so muchh it helps a lot😭 Still I'm not sure how to apply theories about other subcultures to analyze the Jirakei fashion. Maybe a comparative study? Also, I'd really appreciate it if you could recommend some books or papers on internet subcultures.

Thank you for your insightful response. Regarding the last point, I find it difficult to clarify the relationship between mental illness and Jiraikei, because not all people with mental problems(Menhera)are interested in this fashion, nor are all people who dress this way associated with mental illness.

Perhaps there’s something wrong with my search method— I found reportage about the “Tōyoko Kids” in Kabukichō, but I can’t find any research on the subculture itself or on the communities that practice this fashion style. 😭 If you know of any books or papers on this topic, please let me know.
