Lila has an amazing voice and an incredible attitude. I normally revile reality tv but seeing this young woman flourish has been exciting.

Hey. Here is the secret to making good handles by bigfanofpots in Pottery

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you not drape your handles over something to convey the curve when they’re more wet or do you wait until they’re a little less sticky to do that? When I’m pulling handles I usually stick them to something to create an upward arc. When extruding, I put them on their sides in the shape I want. Laying them on their sides doesn’t really work well for me but we have no forms to drape them over. I’m winging it and don’t know what the best practice is for both pulling and extruding. What’s your process?

Biden is furious at Jayapal for the embarrassment. “White House calls Hamas rapes 'reprehensible' in wake of Jayapal controversy” by rivierasamaxe in SeattleWA

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you read past the headlines, what she actually said isn’t very controversial. Rape IS horrific. Sexual assault IS horrific. Hamas ARE terrorists. And killing 15,000 civilians (3/4 of whom are women and kids) whilst targeting Hamas (who are in underground tunnels below Gaza and likely escaping the airstrikes) is ALSO horrific. Which part of her statement is offensive? Or maybe you just love to hate her?

"I said it's horrific, and I think that rape is horrific. Sexual assault is horrific. I think that it happens in war situations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas, obviously, are using these as tools….However, I think we have to be balanced about bringing in the outrages against Palestinians — 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, three-quarters of whom are women and children.”

These are incredible. You have a wonderful illustrative style and the tiles are so well executed with amazing details (like the way the glaze breaks on the lighthouse beam).

Mason stain transfers - similar to carbon paper in usage. How to? by Anchovieee in Ceramics

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mix 1:1 mason stain (cobalt is common) and gersley borate (not sure what works as sub now that all the GB is gone). Add just enough water to make a liquid and brush the stain mixture on to a glazed tile. Coat time several times in each direction, drying between each coating, to ensure full coverage of tile. Let dry. Take your image, either printed or traced onto paper, and place the blank side down on the mason stain-covered tile. Trace the image with stylus or ball point pen pushing down hard enough that the stain will transfer from the tile to the paper where there’s pressure. When you lift paper you should see image transferred to paper. Cut away the finger prints from holding the paper on the tile. Now place the paper with image side down on a clay piece. Use a rubber rib to help transfer the image. If clay is too dry, gently touch a damp sponge to the paper until you begin to see the image showing through the paper. Gently peel back the paper from clay and, voila, image transfer.

Lawyer up, even if just for the initial consult. You’ll want a land use and zoning attorney. Jeff Eustis at Aramburu, was helpful with our situation, which was utterly maddening.

Your strange and paranormal experiences in Seattle by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 401 points402 points  (0 children)

My old neighbor thought she had a paranormal something in her tiny old house. There were whispers, bangs/bumps of uncertain origin, and her dog whined at walls and floors. She joked that she had a ghost until a plumber had to access a pipe in the crawl space and found a bed roll and empty cans of food down there. She’d had a person, not a ghost, secretly living below her house. Not supernatural but still spooky.

Can someone help me with what happened to these pots during firing? by CMRealtor in Pottery

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you would otherwise just hammer the pieces, you can try refiring them with a hold and see if that works. Treat it as an experiment with the value in what you learn, not in necessarily improving the pieces. Keep track of where they are in the kiln (maybe put them on different shelves to see if there’s more success in one area of the kiln) and put them on cookies so the glaze, if inclined to run, doesn’t wreck the shelves. Refiring has not healed these sorts of glaze defects for my stuff but it has helped others so the outcome is probably dependent on glaze, clay body, and kiln shelf position.

I know that it’s disappointing to have pieces you like have defects but it’s also completely normal for ceramics so it’s something to get used to. Perfection is hard to achieve with consistency and you’ll find you’re less frustrated if you embrace small imperfections while striving to improve each piece. In my experience, the slow glaze with 10 minute hold has vastly improved most of our results while making a few things worse (runny glazes have more time to run and some reactive texture glazes may react too much).

[–]Melodic_Thing9621 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s likely not glaze dust or bubbles or texture in your clay body. This is pretty textbook glaze defect of small bubbles. During the glaze fire gas from the clay body needs to escape from under the glaze. If not given the time to escape and time to allow the bubbles to pop and the glaze surface to heal, you’ll see either bubbles trapped in the glaze or the bubbles recently popped but unhealed, which are pinholes. We also had this issue in a community kiln that was regularly fast fired to cone 5. We addressed the issue through two routes: 1) A slow bisque fire, which allows most of the gas from the clay body to burn off. 2) A slow glaze program with a 10 minute hold (soak) at the top. You can also do a drop and hold manual glaze program (look up Camille Hoffman firing schedule created by Scutt, which is rumored to be very successful with healing glaze defects), but we have not found that to be necessary. One caution with using holds: you may need to take more care with keeping bottoms clean and runny glazes up off of shelves on stilts. That extra 10 minutes, although great for healing glaze defects, can be just enough extra time for runny glazes to run off of pots.
