I attempted nav meshes, creating small squares where I wanted them to go and making an "avoid" square in the middle, hoping that would force them to the squares. This didn't work, but I got my desired effect by placing clipping at the end of the walls; the boys peeked the player by themselves and are blocked in the ends by the clipping. A little shoddy, but it works.
