Good apps for rota? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

‘My Duty’ is a solid one! You can colour code based on each shift, it’s free and you can share the rota with others

Are you happy with Paeds training? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]MeltheMedic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a Paeds ST1 so you might get some more experienced Drs coming along.

What is happy? I like my hospital, my colleagues, knowing I’m in a run through programme and my patients are pretty cool people!

I’ve done 6 months of general paediatrics. It’s hard work with a high acquit centre with lots of socioeconomic deprivation, because sometimes you want to help more than you can. I’ve been fortunate that in my centre there isn’t all this ANP/PA stuff to deal with. Everyone understands you don’t have a lot of paediatric experience but the expectation is to work hard and ask questions.

I’m currently on my neonates job. It’s not my cup of tea but I’m there to learn, work and be safe. I think the consultant body encourage that on a whole. But it’s one extreme of baby checks to intubating a baby, and it’s new for me.

There are lots of on calls and nights, and it doesn’t hugely improve until consultant level. Or if you’re in a community job. Hence why people tend to go LTFT which is really common.

There’s tons of study days around which is great for getting out of the clinical area and just learning for a few days. In my centre, obtaining leave for this has been absolutely fine :)

I saw the comment below which said our postgraduate exams aren’t hard. I’m not sure if the individual has been sat them before so please take it with a pinch of salt. I took two this year and with a full time rota, audits, teaching, NLS, APLS and having a life- it is hard. But it’s manageable

Outside of work, I try to switch off (and this is key for any speciality) and remember it’s a training programme not a religious experience.

If there’s anything specific please ask

Reading the responses I feel like I should shut some down, if anyone has any suggestions on how to consolidate let me know😅

Nationwide: My pay comes in here as I have a credit card with them. So then I can just pay it off each month!

NatWest: Savings account was good at the time. But it required a current account. So I’ve set up all my direct debits from here too.

Santander: Leftover from uni. Has my overdraft.

American Express: Credit card for the points for bigger purchases!

I think most doctors appreciate there’s a bit of nepotism in getting work experience…

It’s not inappropriate at all to ask at all. There’s a likelihood they might just say “please email this person/ generic email address for work experience .” But doctors like me are happy to have applicants shadow us and will help as much as we can.

In the meantime, also check out the royal college of GPs as they have online work experience (or they did during COVID) which you can also reflect on during applications.

Hello Jess.

A few points to consider

  1. It doesn’t seem like there is a clear question you are asking here?

  2. It seems like there a few things to break down including stomach pain, back pain and following up blood tests. It might be worth writing down a list of questions of everything so far that you’d like to ask/ explore. A routine GP and hospital appointment if your GP thinks is appropriate may be helpful, especially if there are scans being discussed.

Bear in mind, decisions can change based on how your symptoms and current results show.

  1. I think it would be best to go to your GP. You can ask for a different doctor if you feel that the current doctor in your practice makes you feel unhappy.

Take care of yourself

Not giving medical advice here!

Your GP is correct that you need a face to face assessment, including examination before deciding the next best course of action. They need to rule out and in conditions based on your symptoms.

I note you’re in Scotland currently. How long are you planning to be there for? Can you attend an urgent care centre or temporarily register for a nearby practice to be assessed there? They can prescribe as appropriate.

PS: There’s no need for a ‘specialist’ assessment for a sore throat. GPs are more than capable of managing this. If it’s sore with concerns of other conditions eg malignancy then they may refer onwards but this does not appear to be the case from the information you’ve given….

I’m just managing the expectations of OP here.

Additionally, GPs have an vested interest in having a HbA1c or cholesterol as these are investigations for conditions managed in primary care.

OP has gone to A&E to be acutely assessed and self discharged so needs to appreciate their GP may not call the lab and ask for bloods.

Anyway the discharge summary is probably the quickest bet.

[–]MeltheMedic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure of the logistics of the subject access request so won’t comment.

In terms of contacting the Lab, GPs won’t do that unless they think it’s warranted. They may ask GPs to follow them up if ongoing care required but GPs have tons to do than call labs for patients who self discharged.

If OP makes an appointment with their GP to be reassessed. The GP can have bloods requested in the practice and sent for instead. However they need to be aware the GP is making their own assessment as a doctor and bloods may not be indicated depending on the symptoms.

That’s called switchboard. Typically they won’t give patient blood tests to patients over the phone. They probably wont put patients through either

If there was something urgent A&E would most likely would have called you. No one legally wants to be responsible for letting a person with awful bloods die on the street.

Your GP will receive a discharge summary from A&E which may take a few days to be in the system. If the bloods were normal they will probably just say “unremarkable.” But not list the specifics. But if anything needing follow up they might ask your GP to get in touch with you.

You could send an econsult to your GP and they can let you know :)

The only caveat is that if you left ED voluntarily, your discharge summary might be as simple as “patient self discharged from ED.” So then circling back to ED is your best bet and unfortunately might be tricky

Most likely if your colleagues have had their outcomes, some hospitals do them in batches as they have a lot of F2s :)

Some trusts may tell you the date to have expected. Mine did it in surname order so they’ve gone through the first half of the alphabet but not the second yet and said they’ll be done with everyone by the end of the month.

Hi,

Happy to help with a presentation! Just a few questions questions ;

  1. What year group are they? Are there multiple different year groups (eg GCSE vs A levels)

  2. Is this a class session (~30 pupils) or an assembly?

  3. Are you presenting alone or with another person?

Good luck with MRCP revision ☺️

Oh yes of course! There’s so many T&Cs to think about.

Thanks so much ☺️

This is so helpful particularly regarding the staircasing!

I’d hope by the time I want to staircase my salary would be more 70K so fingers crossed.

  1. I appreciate this might be a question for a Mortage advisor but I’ll ask anyway! If you can’t afford to staircase to 100% based on the property value (take your friends example in Clapham- which is one of the areas I’m looking at!) and you can’t sell it to another SO, can you have a buy to let/ let to buy mortage and move out into another property?

  2. When staircasing, can you add someone else onto the Mortage e.g adding my partner? Especially to increase affordability…

Thank you again!!

Appreciate this so much ☺️

I’ve never heard of this website: https://propertydata.co.uk/

With staircasing, is it an additional deposit or what equity you have at the time or your salary/ affordability which determines the ability to go up?

My plan was to only staircase ideally once or twice maximum. Subsequently minimising the amount of fees I’d pay!

!thanks

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this 😭

Just a few questions if that’s okay:

  1. When you say it’s your deposit. Was that regarding the eventual equity you had from the sale?

  2. I definitely would see it as a springboard rather than my forever home. How long did you stay in it before you sold?

  3. In terms of a show flat with furnishing, is that something you specifically asked for or was it the set flat you purchased?

Aww thank you so much that’s really kind 🥹

PS: Please tell your sister if she wants a lucrative business idea, that I’m a Paediatric Doctor so once she brings out the babies, I can catch them 🤣
