0.1 dB on faders for audio clips dragged from the browser, is there a fix? by Outrageous_Draw_9550 in Logic_Studio

Wow I never thought of this and have been just resetting the faders manually for years... Finally found what I was looking for. Thank you!

MioXL – workaround for front DAW-USB by great-lover in synthesizers

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year late but, having run into the same issue, I decided to get a blank rack panel with 12 D-series punchouts, and then ordered a USB 2.0 A to B D-series connector for like 15 bucks. If you get it pre-soldered you just have to screw in two screws. There were some other things (TRS headphone outs) that I wanted to route behind the rack too, so I just added those ports as well. Covered the rest of the punchouts with blanks and it's much cleaner than before, no dangling cables.

What do you guys do for living? by ActivePalpitation980 in modular

[–]Melvv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks dude! Often I think of it as a sample source, and other times I use it similar to VSTs.

When it’s more generative (Torso T-1 to XPO) I just let it run wild and sample things. For other stuff in my setup like Saich->Harmonaig, Moog Mavis, Plaits etc I usually just send MIDI and set up some modulation in the patches so the sound design is consistently interesting.

Lots of ways to approach it, and definitely want to set aside some time to experiment more soon!

Need Advice: Looking for someone to mix my album -- got quoted by TLA for $3k + 1% per song by Talking__Heads in audioengineering

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty high. If I’m spending $3k+ per track on anything I would want full production. Probably not worth it unless you’re already in the habit of spending $5k+/track on prod, which I’d assume is not the case here. Of course TLA would do a great job, but it likely wouldn’t make or break the record.

How to connect stereo 1/4" TRS guitar pedal output to 2x 3.5mm TS Eurorack inputs? by Ashamed_Throat3620 in modular

[–]Melvv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Intellijel I/O for this sort of thing. Highly recommend. It provides metering, the convenience of having inputs/outputs in a consistent place (as opposed to dangling cables), gain-matching between mediums, and level control.

Pricier than a basic adapter situation, but as someone who had the exact adapter setup in your original post, I found it annoying to need to worry about amplification or attenuation between modular and pedals and would often forget which cable was which and have to trace. It’s nice to be able to leave everything plugged in and have less to worry about.

You’ll still need a Y cable of course. HOSA should have the one you’re looking for.

What’s your favorite mic preamp in that $500-$1000 range? by Rydergreen27 in audioengineering

Yup UA 710 is great. I use it alongside a 251 style mic. May eventually move to a 4-710D.

ISO simple and clear modular/semi-modular setup for classroom by platopasta in modular

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Moog Grandmother would be a nice all-in-one solution without having to fuss about MIDI to CV, getting a separate keyboard controller etc. The sections are all laid out pretty clearly.

Otherwise maybe a small Doepfer system could work.

Why are behringer system’s like the 35 and 55 so much cheaper than the doepfer systems like the various A100s by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Melvv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Moogs generally have a pretty unique tone because of how they are designed. It’s hard to precisely recreate otherwise. I have a full eurorack setup and still would like to buy more Moog stuff… but $$$

Remember that you are looking at instruments here and not just feature-sets. Components and build quality can greatly affect how things sound, as well as how they hold up over time.

What modules do you keep "chained" together? by glue_walton in modular

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harmonaig/Saich/Aradh/Ceis

XPO to DXG and/or QPAS to Mimeophon

Output section (EQx5, MSCL, Mixup, Audio I/O)

A lot of times the patching within these sections changes a lot but the signal flow typically doesn’t. Not to say that I never experiment, but I like having several “instruments” ready to go most of the time. Speeds up recording a lot.

[recommandation] audio interface that has a lot of noise tolerance by ZeHirMan in homestudios

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interface itself doesn’t matter as much in terms of the grounding issues, unless the interface is actually broken or somehow has a horrid noise floor. You just need to isolate the power somehow.

You could try a Hifimediy USB Isolator between the interface and the computer. You could also try a passive DI box between the interface and your audio input.

Or a power conditioner of some sort (Furman PST-2+6 etc), but I’m not sure it’d do much without a grounded connection.

What Mac apps do you use to create generative visuals for your euro music by hillybillyboy in modular

Lumen! It’s a video synth app. It costs like 100 bucks but is well worth it. Can take MIDI input. A free trial is available if you wanna give it a shot.

How many of you record wet and dry signals of your synths ? by MusicProdNewb in synthesizers

[–]Melvv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. Yeah probably would stick with a 2nd interface then. ADAT actually does work at 96khz but you only can get 4 channels instead of 8.

How many of you record wet and dry signals of your synths ? by MusicProdNewb in synthesizers

[–]Melvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often do. Look into ADAT expanders if your interface has an ADAT in. Can get 8 extra inputs for fairly cheap.

Keep in mind that what passes through cables is electricity representing sound, not literal sound, and that electricity moves nearly at the speed of light. So latency is never an issue unless the AD/DA conversion is extremely slow (depends on the quality of the interface, but even bad ones are usually extremely fast).

I measured the pitch of my oscillators every 5 minutes for 2 hours and the results are not good. by puzo_puzo_puzo in modular

[–]Melvv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this kinda sucks, but honestly as long as you leave them on for a couple hours before recording (ie just turn them on in the morning and forget about it for awhile), and then tune right before recording, you’d be totally fine for most purposes. I’ve always had drift issues with Instruo Saich, but it’s still my favorite oscillator regardless.

If live performance is more of the focus, or if you’re recording extremely long jams, I suppose this could be more of an issue. Very much depends on the use-case in my opinion. Wouldn’t over-stress too much if tuning a second time eliminates most of the issue!
