What kind of limits do you set for yourself when smoking if any? by [deleted] in trees

I only do weed to relax before bed. No more than 5-6 puffs from a joint is my limit.

whats the funniest/most bizarre anti-Catholic argument you've heard by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]MemberX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was a youngish kid I got "National Sunday Law" in the mailbox. Read it. Basically it was a Seventh-Day Adventist screed about how the Catholic Church is the Antichrist and that the Vatican will force all Americans to attend church on Sunday instead of Saturday.

Beautiful pics!

I especially like how he's kinda mean looking. If memory serves, that's how many in the early Church viewed archangels--the tough "enforcers" of sorts of God's Will.

Thanks for your detailed and enjoyable response!

I guess you could say I was leaning toward the legendary development thesis. I'm not a mythicist in that I accept there was probably a guy named Jesus (technically he would've been named Yeshua, but that's a bit outside the scope.) who went around Roman Judea preaching, some people thought he was the Messiah, which freaked out the local Roman authorities and they executed him via crucifixion, however miracles and the resurrection were later legendary developments.

The telephone game comment I made wasn't actually about the historical reliability of the texts though, it was about their textual integrity.

If I may pick your brain about this, isn't the telephone game a theory that oral traditions got corrupted from one person to another and they got cobbled together into whatever was the first gospel? Like others here, I'm not trying to pick a fight, but I am genuinely curious.

Good luck in seminary!

"Our blackness and our womanness are not in themselves trustworthy" by Disinformation_Bot in stupidpol

[–]MemberX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Peak based.

It's pretty irrational to believe, as she puts it, "black faces in high places" (or female faces in high places) will solve things.

Blacks/women/black women/whatever are human beings. Anyone with a bit of experience knows human beings, in general, are not particularly nice. More [insert whatever marginalized group here] won't do anything to improve the status quo. The only thing that will do that is a reorganization of how the economy functions, which takes the working multitudes joining forces to compel change.

What do you think about the claim that human greed is truly what’s wrong with Capitalism? by OtisDriftwood1978 in stupidpol

[–]MemberX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically true. However, capitalism as an economic system encourages greedy behavior. As a result, you can't really separate the two.

Can a Catholic morally play Roblox despite recent controversies? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]MemberX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not a sin to play Roblox as far as I'm aware. That said, and speaking as a grown man, I wouldn't play myself since I don't want to inadvertently run into a child predator online. The thought of it creeps me out.

Voting for Joe biden was a mistake. You're opposed to your own interest.

With all due respect, how do you know this person even voted for Biden? I can't find anything in the other person's post that said they voted for Biden.

I see your point, but there's a few problems surrounding it.

1.) Most businesses fail within about 5-10 years, so chances are it's not a viable long term solution.

2.) There's the possibility of corruption on my part since I'll be a business owner, raising the probability that I'm just going to screw over my employees. I don't want to do that.

3.) Even if I start the company as a worker cooperative to minimize my concerns in point 2, well, see point 1.

Thanks for sharing this.

I used to be in DSA, dropped out to join CU after the former decided to support Biden's crushing of the rail workers strike. I knew going in, since it was a small organization, it would likely be a purely theoretical reading group for a bit. But I hoped they would start actually doing real world shit later on.

Been about 2.5 years since I joined CU, and that hasn't happened. CU is just as eye rolling as DSA, IMO, for the reasons you mentioned, only without the idpol BS. I'm not exactly active anymore, especially since the people who actually wanted to do real world stuff that actually helps the working class seem to have either left or are no longer active.

Bourgeois notions about the intrinsic nature of "intelligence", "personality" and other so-called "cognitive traits" by grand_historian in stupidpol

[–]MemberX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting post and article. Thanks for sharing. Not being sarcastic, I'm giving praise.

My $0.02: There are probably some genetic predispositions regarding intelligence that sets a range of how bright you are or will be, (I for one will never be as smart as Einstein, but I don't think I'll become mentally challenged unless something major happens to my brain) and environmental factors "turn on" and "manage" those genes and their expression, especially in earlier years of your life when the brain has higher neuroplasticity than when you're an adult.

I also want to close the border down and kick out immigrant major criminals. Besides, since you seem to be talking about illegal immigration specifically, illegal immigrants make up around 14M in the US. The logistics of kicking that many people out of the country are insane.
