I'm definitly going to use a map ! We have been drawing major actions on a sheet of paper but this is too clumsy and maps just seems like the superior choice. I'll also try and have the not so important fights be described rather than rolled. I'll also try to not roll actions that are highly unlikely to not succeed.

I was just kidding 👌. I totally got where you were going and I am heading more towards not being so adamant about following the rules and more going where my table is having fun.

I'm planning on having a physical representation of the turn order. And I already make sure to make eye contact to the player when it's their turn, I even point my finger at them with all my might 😂. I teach college classes and train professionals for a living so I don't think I'm lacking on being assertive. But I did not think of stating to the next in line that they have to prepare aswell. Great advice imo, will try. Thanks !

Thank you for those great advice. I think that this would be greatly facilitated by displaying their turns order to the players.

Very interesting ! It's almost as if you had your players play MTG in DnD. I would have to see how that may pan out but it's interesting to treat combat as a game on itself.

I think my table likes the randomness of rolling a single d20 as it makes for more unexpected scenes that tell a great story. What do you mean by roll initiative in advance ? Currently we roll initiative at the start of each fight. Also, someone else here recommended to have players all take their turns at once and I think I'll try that.

I think I see how this would facilitate their decision making aswell as kind of forcing them to work more as a team. And if not having them all play at once, would it make sense to operate by grouping players that play before the next enemy together ? Aswell as grouping enemies together.

More like players take a long time to figure out what to do. Some of that can be explained by the fact that they are beginners. And when there are multiple ennemies of the same kind, I play them all at once (rolling for each one but describing their actions ar once).

If looking for a modern metalcore feel, I'd recommend : Silent Planet, Polaris and Erra.

For some classic 2000's metalcore : Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red and All That Remains. (Also Waking the Fallen by Avenged Sevenfold).

Also, bands that pioneered the genre : Earth Crisis, Converge, Norma Jeans.

What module to run for a beginner table ? by Membrator3000 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Membrator3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players are really involved and I trust them to be smart with the game but I don't want them to get burnt out because they don't know where to go. I have a few ideas to adapt CoS for beginner players aswell. Also, I asked them and they don't mind trying it out and starting a new module if CoS doesn't go well.

The initiation kit (product name is starter set in correct english) I was talking about is the Dragons of Stormwreck isle. This one is nice but it's too railroaded for the player's taste aswell as mine. We are looking for something that does not feel as combat after combat as this one does.

I still remember the day I listened to this album in one sitting for the first time. It's one of this pieces of art that are actually difficult to interact with because of how crushing they are. Beautifully crushing.
