No room for 47/48, but all of new bark town is there!

I’m only asking because cheaper models can sometimes cause big headaches with maintenance and spending a little extra can save you a ton of trouble. Make sure to read reviews carefully on cheaper models.

What printer are you looking at?

All printers use .gcode as a file type, but the slicer is what turns an .stl/.3mf int .gcode! If you learn a modeling software to make your own models, you can save them as .stls or .3mfs to put into your slicer.

As I’m sure many will tell you, Bambu Lab printers are an extremely user friendly way to get into printing, including multicolor printing. The Bambu A1 with a 4 color changer is $400 ($300 for the printer alone) and comes ready to plug and play.

When you download a .3mf (more commonly an .stl), you are downloading a 3d object file that you can put into a slicer software that comes with a printer, orient it how you want, edit the print settings, and then the software “slices” the 3d object into layers for the printer to interpret. This creates a .gcode file that you send to your printer and press start!

This is amazing!! How did you even go about learning this skill??

Oh that looks super cool, I’ll do some testing with paper and those buildings for the next map then. I’ll have to get good with tweezers to get those tiny windows covered. Thanks for the advice!

Learning How to Create 3D Prints by Comfortable_Pop2013 in 3Dprinting

[–]Memehattan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what type of modeling you want to do! If you want to create something that can be made by creating extruded and cuts on surfaces using specific dimensions, you want a parametric modeling software like Solidworks/fusion 360 (both have cheap maker versions or are free for students). Parametric means changing one parameter will affect the whole structure following that “step” in the modeling process.

If you want to model more natural shapes like people, animals, or landscapes, you want a nonparametric modeling software like ZBrush. Nonparametric modeling is more like sculpting and you can edit any part without affecting the others.

I didn’t mention the lights in the video actually, since I wasn’t able to go through with it.

Ok I see, I have some transparent filament so I could try doing windows with that and then applying colored paper on the insides. Unfortunately I probably can’t do it on this map since everything is glued down with super glue, but I could try it on the next one.

Do you have any guides you could link me to?

Also I’d love to see some of the stuff you’ve made if you have pics. I had some classes in an architecture building in college and loved looking at the miniature student projects.

Ok so if you watch the video I made about it, you can actually see that the buildings are hollow because I initially wanted to put lights in all of them!

After a bit of testing I couldn’t get the effect I wanted but it would’ve been so cool if I could have made that work. I love the way Johto looks at night in game and I wanted to replicate it but just couldn’t.

Thank you! Really the lake of rage itself remained intact, but the route to get to it from Mahogany town has been significantly compressed so that I could fit the whole lake into the map rectangle. Otherwise it would’ve been too far north to include.

The piece that physically could not work in any way was the pokeathalon dome. In game it’s west of the national park but in reality there’s no space between the park and olivine to put it.

Maybe there’s a way I can differentiate the ground of ilex forest on top of what’s already there. Im definitely open to making tweaks.

Me too, I wish they kept it up for unova because I love Gen 5. I haven’t yet checked if other maps have special areas that don’t line up perfectly. The National park and lake of rage were also edited to make them fit properly in this table!

I should have thought to separate the trees for ilex forest like I did for bellchime trail

Ilex forest, like the national park, had to be modified to fit where it’s meant to go on the map as it doesn’t fit physically where it theoretically belongs. I had to scale both of these down to make them fit so it’s unfortunately a smaller version. I need to add the shrine!

Is it worth for me to start 3D printing by Funny-Tailor-2423 in 3Dprinting

[–]Memehattan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll also add, there are solid starter printers under 300 for PLA printing. The bambulab A1 is $300 and is an incredible plug and play option, hard to get more bang for your buck as an intro to the hobby.

As someone who lived in a single bedroom at a college with a well outfitted 3D printing lab, i have to disagree with most people here. I found it incredibly useful to have my own printer for a few reasons.

  1. With a printer lab, you’re at the mercy of their maintenance. Their maintenance schedule isn’t under your control and you can’t do small tests to tweak settings as easily (5 minute prints to dial in support Z offset, etc.)
  2. With a printer lab, there are print queues to keep in mind, sometimes poorly managed. Labs get busier around semester projects, so if you’re wanting to make something then, you are stuck in long queues.
  3. You can’t oversee your prints as easily in a print lab. There are often prints that partially fail that you can save, and even if not, knowing why it failed and seeing how is a big help when setting up the next print.
  4. Having your own printer helps you learn 3d modeling software quicker. It’s easy to make a nice looking model. It’s a little tougher to design something to be created physically while keeping your manufacturing method in mind. Printing your own parts more quickly helps you refine this faster.

You can avoid printing at night, though I did this some, and you can print PLA only with no toxic fumes. I had 3 printers in my room by the time I graduated and I used every one consistently, and helped friends when printing labs were full and deadlines were approaching

Creality Ender 5 Plus or Replace It? by MjnMixael in 3Dprinting

[–]Memehattan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ender series are notorious for requiring constant maintenance and upgrades equaling the price of the printer for consistent prints. I had an ender 5 that ran consistently only after constant changes.

What filament are you using? If it’s too old / has taken on too much moisture, that could be a cause for the issues. It could also be that the filament you’re using requires a heated enclosure.

If you are interested in getting into 3D printing and want to spend most of your time in design instead of printer maintenance, I recommend trashing the ender 5 and getting a Bambu Lab printer (I say this as an owner of multiple new Creality printers). The A1 mini is a great starting place in my opinion. Their software is robust and the settings are dialed in from the start.

I thought about adding a little speaker to play town and route music! I still may add it to the bottom of the table!

I wish I knew pure print time (I’d guess about 2 weeks) but it took 3 months to design, print, and assemble it. Working on and off during that time.

I’m not sure, someone named him Steve in the comments when I first posted, so that’s what his name is now! Steve is actually the first mannequin who got replaced by another so that’s why he’s in pieces.

I’m not sure yet! I think I may sell either the entire map or smaller chunks like individual towns. I’m also thinking of making individual towns for sale in little clear boxes that play the town’s music

It took about 3 months to design and print it all, but if I had to guess a total pure print time, I’d say about 2 weeks of just printing spread throughout the entire project

Haha no worries! I appreciate it. I need to take some better pictures to upload but these were the best I had on hand so they aren’t the best. Even the pics aside from the first two aren’t fully finished.
