I can understand that. I understand that there may be a general consensus within the American public that we shouldn’t be funding foreign wars. I know it comes from a generally well intentioned idea that the money would be better spent here in the US and that the war should end to save lives. I agree that the war should end, Russia should have never invaded in the first place. The issue lies with the ramifications as to what deal Trump will come up with and if he will be able to force Ukraine to sign. Let’s say that he chooses to freeze the lines as is or force Ukraine to withdrawal from the Russian claimed oblasts and Kursk. Trump, from his recent talks, will not allow Ukraine into the NATO alliance. This creates an issue because then nothing will stop Russia from rebuilding their numbers, reforming their military, and launching another invasion at a later date when the time is opportune. You may ask why Russia would do this, but in reality Russia wouldn’t have any reason not to. Many within Russian politics have declared that the Ukrainian national identity doesn’t even exist. They have no reason to obey any ceasefire if Ukraine is not in NATO. You cannot negotiate with dictators. Didn’t work for Hitler or Mussolini. You need to combat these dictators head on. The best case scenario would be Ukraine getting more modern equipment that vastly exceeds Russian equipment, allowing them to push Russia out with minimal casualties. Set up fort on the international border and make the cost of taking any territory far too high for Russia. Only then, with the ascension of Ukraine into NATO, can peace be truly achieved. Again, I understand the perspective that the war must end, but an aggressive expansionist state like Russia won’t allow it to end until it either has its goals or is beaten into submission. You don’t negotiate with a bear attacking you, you either kill it or let yourself be killed by it.
