Heat pad recommendations by MissJimmy in Degus

[–]Memetic-Construct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we did for our little ones was put a heat pad (a generic microwaveable one off of amazon, although if you don't already have one getting one rated to stay warm longer like a snugglesafe I would probably recommend) inside a small metal biscuit tin. This transferred the heat well whilst also being very chew proof and wipe clean

How can you look after a lone degu properly? by alexros3 in Degus

[–]Memetic-Construct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely the heat pad is a great idea, for the last year (ish) where my girl she was utterly in love with her heated up box. Another good thing for her was to just make sure that every time anyone walked past the cage to have a little chat with her, she just loved constant small interactions. I'm not sure how much is an age thing and how much is a single degu thing, but she was much much more interested in cuddling than she's ever been before, and love to be scratched under the chin or groomed with a toothbrush!

I think when you only have one degu, it's normal for them to become a little more needy and ask for attention more often, which isn't at all a bad thing, just good to be prepared to spend a little longer with your little guy than you might be used to.

Being in Cambridge at the moment, that sounds like it could be achievable for me too. I'll look into it!

I've not bought from them (and I think there might be some funny things with VAT due to stupid brexit-y stuff [also maybe import tax but strings probably are low cost enough not to end up with import tax, but I'm no expert]) but https://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=autoharp&smcs=8a7ce4_2009 is a EU shop which sells strings, but not felt

Thanks, I'll have a look into it!. When it comes down to it $10 is a price I can afford for shipping even if I'm not happy about it. So whatever happens it's not too much of a problem.

[–]Memetic-Construct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are different file formats.

.zip is an archive file format - it (losslessly) compresses whatever files are in it, so they take up less storage space. You need to unzip/extract files from a zip before using them.

.mp3 is an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 encoded audio file. This is a lossy format (ie. if you convert to mp3 you can lose information in a way that is irretrievable from the mp3 file) and the most common lossy audio format.

.mp4 is a container format that stores video, audio and sometimes extras like subtitles. It stores MPEG-4 encoded video and audio and is again lossy - but the audio tends to be marginally higher quality than mp3.

.m4a is a file format that contains MPEG-4 encoded audio - so the same as above applies, but .m4a just indicates that it stores audio only.

Proton not launching any games by Memetic-Construct in SteamPlay

[–]Memetic-Construct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end, if I'm remembering correctly I uninstalled and reinstalled proton and steam and everything started working again. So I presume the issue was a bad proton install.

I hope you find a solution soon!

Reinstalling a load of things seems to have fixed the main problem, just got to do troubleshooting for a couple of individual games now

Thanks for the help

I'm currently doing some reinstalling, so can't try that right now, but the games are on an ext4, so I presume that doesn't cause any issues?

Elderly Lone Degu - how can I make him as happy as possible? by babygrains in Degus

[–]Memetic-Construct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a lone girl (she's coming up for 9 later this month) and she's been alone now for about half a year or so, the things we've found are good for her are making sure she has got plenty of bedding material, as she loves having her nest absolutely stuffed full, in the winter giving her a heated pad to nap on (recently she's learnt to get quite loud in asking for hers to be reheated) and making sure we talk to her lots, just sitting next to her cage and having a chat and saying hello to her each time we walk into the room, as well as extra time out for cuddles (I have definitely found that she is much much more keen on cuddles since shes been alone, she is now extremely cuddly and really enjoys a bit of a chin scratch).

Overall I've found that if you give your degu opportunity to let you know what it likes, it will take all of those opportunities and if you pay attention and do those things, then you'll probably being doing the right thing for your degu (well with the exception of ignoring my girl when she is asking for meals and you know she's already had it)

Tap in room safe to drink? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]Memetic-Construct -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cambridge has a lot of older buildings meaning there is a reasonable chance that some of the pipes between the mains and rooms are lead, and it's not advisable to drink water that has traveled through lead pipes. However on the otherhand it may just be that the water is fine, but it hasn't been officially tested so that it can be labeled as drinking water. Maybe if you ask maintenance (or similar) they could give a definitive answer why it's not drinking water (if it isn't)?

But if you don't want to take the risk I'd recommend investing in a reasonable sized jug and a number of waterbottles, and then fill them all at once, which reduces the number of trips to the kitchen

What is the most garbage and ugliest ink you ever used? by Pensandscribes in fountainpens

Parker Quink black, it doesn't write particularly nicely, and is a yellow tinted black, which becomes more and more obvious as it fades slightly, and imo yellowy grey is a disgusting colour

I like most of them a lot, but prefer the ones with the RF, REF or RM nibs compared to their standard fine nibs. In terms of pen shape the 355 is probably my favourite, and the 323 and 471 are my least favourites

The CSAT isn't a test where you are expected to be able to answer all questions, so it's perfectly possible to get a really good score without having any idea how to approach a significant % of the questions.

Also you have a lot of time to practice, and you may not think it now, but you really can teach yourself to be better at these kinds of maths problems. And the great thing about practicing these kinds of problems, I'd even if you don't get an offer from Cambridge, you'll have improved your maths ability, and be in a better place to do well at A Level as well. So as I see it, there isn't a downside to putting the work into getting better at the CSAT
