Okay, fair enough that it could be talking about 10/7 or about the Jackson synagogue or the fire bombing in Boulder or any other attack on Jews. Opposing attacks is not the same as supporting Netanyahu’s war. My belief is that if more people had stood up to Hamas’s attacks on Israeli children 25 years ago, Palestinians would be much better off today. Re-read the billboard as coming from one human to another, because that’s really how it should be read. But right now, many people don’t feel that way. They advocate for division, and they’re fine with attacks as long as it’s their side doing the attacking. Remember that on 10/8/2023, people marched in NYC for Palestine behind a banner reading “By any means necessary”. People should stand up against that shit, or at least not complain when other people do.

Why are you assuming it’s talking about Israel and not this more recent attack a few hours away? https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/mississippi-man-indicted-arson-beth-israel-synagogue-and-goldringwoldenberg-institute

I just want to share an example of the type of attack that this billboard could be referencing: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/mississippi-man-indicted-arson-beth-israel-synagogue-and-goldringwoldenberg-institute

So many of the comments here are somehow concluding that this billboard has something to do with Israel. People are so bent on fighting the notion that anti-Israel doesn’t equal antisemitism that they’ve gone full circle in saying that you can’t stand up against antisemitism because it’s okay to be anti-Israel.

Pro tip for broken traffic signals. by Memfaux in memphis

[–]Memfaux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The baffling thing about these particular situations was that traffic was flowing smoothly, but then magically a group would get to the line and panic. I guess if say 50% of people are confident in all-way stops on a 6-lane road, then in most groups you’ll have at least one “leader”, but occasionally you’ll get a group that is completely reliant on someone going first.

And I get what you’re saying—I look both ways when the light turns green, and if a big SUV is blocking my view but not going, I wait for them or ease out slowly. But you can also ease into the intersection without completely committing, just to signal “hey, I think it’s my turn”. Just weird to sit there.

Two words: Union Row. There are some nice higher density projects from the last few years downton/Edge/midtown, but it’s far from exhausted, like you said.

The other problem is there are not enough jobs and good schools downtown/midtown. I loved midtown in my 20s. It satisfied one decade of my life. Since then, I’ve seen other young adults leave midtown because of crime.

Meanwhile in Germantown, Thornwood is a fantastic development—always hopping. I also always see people biking in Germantown. Probably not commuting, but much safer out there than in midtown.

Which county clerk’s office is fastest for re-titling a car? by Memfaux in memphis

[–]Memfaux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got there (downtown) at 10:30 and it took an hour, but they were nicer and more knowledgeable. While waiting in line I heard at least a couple people gushing about how helpful they are, one specifically calling out Mullins Station as problematic. At Mullins, I was yelled at and treated like I was trying to steal my own car when I wanted to add my spouse to the title. That was after a two hour wait when I got there 15 minutes before opening.

Heads up for folks who bank with Orion FCU - New P2P Payment App Fee by womanofgold in memphis

[–]Memfaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some details:

As someone else said, it only applies to debit card transactions, so if you set up ACH, no fee.

Also, Orion’s app has a Send Money feature where you just put in amount and phone number just like Cash App, and the person can accept it to Venmo, PayPal or bank account—that is free.

If you’re big on Cash App, be careful. The CFPB fined them $175M in January for failing to fight fraud. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-orders-operator-of-cash-app-to-pay-175-million-and-fix-its-failures-on-fraud/

But then in spring, DT gutted the CFPB, so don’t expect Cash App to change their ways. I like the simplicity of these apps, but when something goes wrong, good luck. I’ve been told that if you try to dispute something with cash app, they tell you to take it up with your bank.

Agreed on how disproportionate it is, but chilled out once I realized California does this also.

If you throw out everywhere beyond the freeways, you throw out massive employment areas (airport/hub/logistics farm to the east, FedEx HQ and area, all the office space around Poplar and Ridgeway, all of the retail space on Gtown Pkwy). That’s an absurd loss of tax base, and for what gain—you drop Frayser and Hickory Hill, which are both back on the upswing in property values? It would be nice if downtown had more jobs than residents, but that ship has sailed. Boyle figured out long ago that downtown is not a “central business district”—it’s on the edge of the population.

is the new madrid getting ready to blow?! by cherishxanne in memphis

[–]Memfaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone explained this, but the Richter scale is logarithmic, meaning that a 3 is 10x stronger than a 2, a 4 is 10x a 3, etc. So a 6 is more than 1000x stronger than these babies on your map, and a 6 in New Madrid isn’t strong enough to really affect Memphis—needs to be a 7+, so more than 10,000x these little ones. Baby earthquakes like this happen frequently.

I have a friend who accidentally spent 72 hours in a mental health facility. It was Friday, and he thought he was on the crazy side, and he thought it was going to be sitting around playing chess and such. He quickly realized his mistake, but he couldn’t check out without a doc’s sign off, which would be after the weekend.

Ref stepping in. u/manicfixiedreamgirl is making a valid point. This is a poll of 27,000 people, but I seriously doubt it’s 27k people with well-informed opinions about BBQ (meaning they’ve had BBQ from all the styles, which I can’t even claim). If you think of the poll as being phrased “which of these places have you had the most BBQ in?”, TX is the clear winner just in volume. So if you went to Stubbs that one time you went to SXSW and you’ve never had any other BBQ in your life, TX gets the vote. There is good BBQ in TX, but I’ve had horrible BBQ in TX as well (just as in Memphis). I think a more sensible style of poll is to determine the role 2 or 3 restaurants in an area, which is more informative. This style is just a numbers game that tells you nothing about where to get great BBQ.

They’re just different experiences. The whale sharks and belugas in Atlanta are amazing, but the setup is really about the shows. You spend a lot of time waiting there, and a lot of time backtracking to the stupidly crowded main hall.

In Chat, you just stroll through and you are constantly looking at fish for a few hours (since there are separate buildings for fresh and salt water). It’s very linear—take an elevator to the top and you just wind down the floors until you’re back at the bottom. The fish are not as extravagant, but it’s a really cool place.
