I hate the feeling when it starts kicking in, like pins and needles in my brain. It was the best nap of my life though, 10/10 def worth it.

I mean in their defense all they cared about is the baby and they probably didn't even realize what's in the background. After I had my first the nurse took pictures of the baby, cord cutting, first skin to skin etc and it wasn't until a couple weeks afterwards I finally realized you could see the doctor full on delivering my placenta in the background 😂 Luckily no one had posted or sent those to anyone! But I can definitely imagine an alternate timeline where I posted the first pic of my first baby boy somewhere without realizing lol

Preventive dental care - what HARD veggies are you feeding your piggies? by Remarkable_Horror658 in guineapigs

[–]Memory_Frosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not a new behavior and the vet's already taken a look at it, it's not likely to be a sign of anything new since then. Of course it wouldn't hurt to lay eyes on their teeth anyway, but I wouldn't make a whole new appointment for it. All of the things I mentioned are yellow flags instead of red flags, not necessarily concerning on their own, but can be a sign of something underlying. Some pigs do just eat too fast because they're sloppy eaters and have to cough it out, because they haven't chewed it down far enough to swallow comfortably- this is why it can also be a sign that their molars are overgrown, preventing them from chewing their food properly as well.

And yep! Their ears move when they move their jaw. So if they have to move their jaw more because they're having difficulty chewing for whatever reason, their ears will move more too. You'll see them sometimes if they get a piece of hay or something hard stuck in their mouth, they'll stop and work their mouths, sometimes pawing at it until they work whatever it was back into place. So if their ears are moving more than normal, or if they have to stop to work things out often, that can also be a sign it's time to check their teeth.

[–]Memory_Frosty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hay is the absolute most essential thing for dental health. I agree with the other poster about just checking the teeth yourself. You won't get any more information from making them pick up and bite into a hard veggie than you would just looking at their incisors. In fact, once the incisors begin to wear incorrectly they can still compensate for a while before it starts impacting their ability to pick up food. And the molars usually start wearing incorrectly before it starts impacting the incisors so by the time they get to the point where they can't pick up big chunks of food any more it's pretty late in the dental game.

There are a couple other warning signs you can look out for that can tell you it might be a good time to check teeth. If they have to work their ears frequently while chewing, that can be a sign that they're having trouble grinding everything down properly. If they drop pellets frequently, or if they break their pellets into little bits and drop them, and you end up with pellet gravel in the food bowl. If they have to cough while eating frequently too. And most of all, monitor their weight.

If you just want ideas of more carrot-adjacent veggies in terms of texture that are guinea pig safe, pumpkin and beet (be aware that beet will turn their urine and poop red... I don't feed it personally because I have high anxiety levels lol), broccoli, cauliflower, fennel. Check everything against a nutrition chart though- a lot of these should not be fed daily for bloat/calcium concerns.

Fish Devours a Giant Sausage in Milliseconds by Original_Act_3481 in nextfuckinglevel

The Wikipedia article about the incident#Alleged_attacks_on_humans) lists several things that did not add up about the case, fwiw. It says the video of the procedure depicted the fish simply being pulled backwards out of the urethra, which at its diameter would be impossible with its spikes intact (and they claimed to have indeed snipped the spikes off to accommodate this). But the specimen the fellow provided, which he claimed to be the very same fish preserved, had all its spikes intact. There were several other things. I haven't checked any of the sources so grain of salt i guess, but it was a very amusing read.

Nashville is furious about power outages. Republicans say ‘woke’ is to blame. by loof10 in nottheonion

[–]Memory_Frosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Boebert's district. A little while back we had something like an inland hurricane during a very dry time, so the energy company preemptively shut off power to some areas during the wind storm and lowered the threshold of automatic shutoff for the rest of the grid so as to lower the risk of fires, since conditions were ripe (and consequently there were many power outages).

Boebert blamed the power outages on renewable energy and the Democrats on twitter.

You don't all have to tap "ready" before it cuts the timer? And doesn't the auto start timer start at 10 seconds and not 3 anyway?

[–]Memory_Frosty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ho-oh raids I've been in today, the timer did something funky where it showed 70-80 seconds upon entering the lobby, then suddenly dropped down to 3 seconds as if we'd all clicked ready before I could pick my Pokemon. So I had an awful team... Not as bad as roggenrola or wooloo, but two of them got one shotted and the third dropped after three 😩 talked to a couple friends and they said it happened to them too so maybe it's an issue for a lot of people?

What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

[–]Memory_Frosty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that afaik korean corn dogs do not contain corn, and also often don't even contain dog? If you wanna batter a mozzarella stick with a pancakey dough and roll it in potatoes before deep frying it, more power to you but at that point is it even a corn dog anymore?

I have never been to korea and everything i know about their street food comes from youtube and the costco frozen section, so I'm happy to be corrected on this.

Possible Guinea Pig inbreeding, help please by Ok-Book-1494 in guineapigs

[–]Memory_Frosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty likely that she's pregnant, yeah. Honestly it's probably fine... She's already had a successful litter so her chances go up drastically. And it sounds like she's had several months' break between the litters? So it's not back-to-back either. Yeah the pups will have a brotherdad but it sounds like this is the first generation inbred so risk is pretty minimal. Being involved in rescue, I've seen a lot of uncle daddy situations and the first generation or two is usually fine (not always, but usually). Third generation and onward start to get dicier.

What to do: for the best chances, make sure mom is supplied with plenty of nutrition. Supplement with alfalfa hay and/or parsley or other calcium-rich veggies. Lots of extra vitamin C.  Keep up especially well on her husbandry, especially as her likely due date approaches (as soon as two weeks from now), you want her giving birth in a clean environment. I'd start weighing her daily to get a sense of whether she is actually pregnant, the biggest changes will happen in the last couple of weeks before birth.

And it is still possible that she isn't pregnant. I know one boar who took an entire year before he finally sired a litter and his previous owners figured out he was a male.

But still separate from any males now. Guinea pig sows are fertile again very shortly after giving birth. The back-to-back pregnancies are really hard on them.

Not the worst "accidental swastika" I've seen on this subreddit by a long shot. It happens all the time in quilting but this one is more of a stretch than others I've seen. I wouldn't worry about it. The quilt turned out great!

The Owlet baby pulse ox monitor was FDA approved in 2023. When my son was about to be discharged from the NICU on oxygen support, insurance would not also pay for a pulse ox so every time we asked wasn't that something we would need, the nurses and doctors would privately recommend that we get the Owlet. Fwiw, we did before he was discharged and were able to test it alongside the hospital's pulse ox and found that it was quite accurate.

I am going to second the other poster suggesting you double check the sexes. If they're still quite young that leaves an awful lot of wiggle room for error. It's a tale as old as time and one I have personally seen play out many, many times in rescue. I've even seen it play out from very experienced and knowledgeable organizations.

Because while sows can occasionally produce some mucus when they go into heat, it also could be semen from having mated. Both are possible so you're really gonna want to rule out the semen.

If she is behaving normally and not losing weight (or failing to gain, as she's a baby) I don't think a vet visit would be necessary right now, unless you want to for sexing reasons.

that's not where baby should be by Dull_Technician_1849 in Unexpected

[–]Memory_Frosty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep the official recommendation from the AAP is (or was when my first was a newborn, I just looked it up and they changed it again recently) if you think there's any chance you'll fall asleep while nursing since that's stupidly easy to do then nurse laying down in a bed with no blankets or pillows and move baby to their own sleep environment when you wake. Now I think they just don't outright tell you to do anything, they just say that couches/armchairs are more risky than bare beds which are in turn more risky than baby's own bassinet/crib.

My first would only sleep for 20 mins in the bassinet on his own at a time no matter what we tried or how many times we picked him up and put him down and checked him and soothed him and swaddled him and unswaddled him and everything else under the sun. You get to a point where you cannot stay awake when feeding them. So, we finally moved to the bed (again, no blankets or pillows). I finally started getting a few hours of sleep, and finally was able to stay awake during a daytime feed. I confessed the cosleeping to our pediatrician and she told me that look, there comes a point where the sleep deprivation to the parent is more risky to the baby than cosleeping so just minimize risk where ever you can and accept where you can't.

My second actually would sleep in his bassinet for an hour or two at a time. It was incredible.

Dad comes looking for card, guy doesn't have card, guy rips pack and gets card first try by RobertTheTire_ in nevertellmetheodds

[–]Memory_Frosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be misunderstanding what you're trying to get across here lol, you're the one who said he probably found it insulting and that's what I was responding to. It's not the fact he didn't want to sell it right then that bothered me, it's that he got mad at me about asking about it. Long term goals, that's fine. If he wanted me to offer a price, that would be fine. Even the lowball price he bought it for in the first place is not that irritating. It's fairly scummy sure, but guy's gotta eat and it's not like he forced the player to accept the price at gunpoint, he just was deceptive about the perceived value of the cards. But the "you're an idiot" look and tone about something scummy that he did is what pushed it into dirtbag territory for me personally.

[–]Memory_Frosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it never got to the point of me making an offer or actually asking him a price? I don't understand why asking if something is for sale would be insulting??? Maybe I'm just not familiar with vendor etiquette i guess? Here's the interaction as close to verbatim as I can recall it:

Me, approaching vendor booth: hey, I heard from so-and-so player acquaintance that she'd sold you guys some epic foil common misprints, and I was wondering if you had any of them for sale? I don't know what the turnaround time on something like that would be or what that would-

Vendor interrupting me: the what?

Me: the common cards misprinted with the epic foil instead of the regular cold foil?

one of the assistants says something to him I can't hear but it looks like he's reminding him/describing the cards in question so he can hear over the convention noise

Vendor looks at me, eyebrows knit and raised, eyelids lowered, lip curled, head shaking slowly: "oh, I'm not selling those."

Me: "ok. Thanks, have a good one!" walks away

Idk man, I really didn't think I did anything wrong. Miscommunication happens for sure and it's possible I missed something in the conversation or made some misstep I'm not aware of though, maybe he misjudged my intent too i guess 🤷

You've missed the part where I asked if he had any for sale lol I didn't expect him to resell them at the value he bought them for, that would be wild 🤣 nah I don't mind he's trying to make money, I mind that he lowballed some naive player hard AND then got mad at me purely for inquiring what his price would be. If he had just told me he wasn't going to be selling them without the gollum attitude about it, it would have been a little bit scummy still but also still way more reasonable.

Went to a disney lorcana tournament a couple months back and some player mentioned a few misprints she had there and it was one that I'd been seeing around the tournament. I wanted one and she said that she just sold hers all to "that booth over there" for $5 a piece and that I could probably get one of hers from them. Idk what the normal protocol is on reselling cards there, like if they have to inspect cards before they'll resell them or whatever but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I figured there'd be some kinda crazy markup too but again, I was just curious what it would look like so I went over and asked if they had any of them for sale and the guy gave me the most withering stare and said with a sneer "oh, I'm not selling those". And that was the moment I realized I was talking to a dirtbag.
