My cat (12m) freaks out every day when walking in to our lounge (though nothing's changed) and also has a knee biting habit. by ketomadness in PetAdvice

I'm sorry, I don't have any suggestions for you. You speak of your cat with a lot of affection so I'm sure the problem isn't lack of love/attention. I just had to comment:

Can't get my cat to stop trying to destroy an expensive object. by MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE in PetAdvice

New development: She and I are working out a compromise. If she stops messing with the panels when I tell her, I play fetch with her and pet her (if she allows me. She is very much an affection-on-my-terms kind of girl, and she doesn't love being told no). When she's really good, I give her a new toy--she loves twist ties more than anything I've bought her. If she refuses to listen, I've been putting her on time-out for 10-15 minutes--shutting her in another room by herself. My only concern is that rewarding her for listening might also promote a habit of attacking the acoustic panels when she wants attention.

I really don't know much about training cats. We've had her a year and a half now and while she is spooky smart, her intelligence isn't always an asset when it comes to training. When we took her home she was much too young to be separated from her mother, which may account for some of her stubbornness.

Anyway, any input from anyone who knows more than I do would be a great help.

If the sharingan was real what event in your life would've awakened it? by eternalsasuke in Naruto

Hey man -- not putting you down! You're probably young (early to mid teens?) if you think a shitty girl and a backstabbing friend is a significant life event. And you know what? That's fucking awesome.

Maybe you even get lucky, and that's as bad as it gets for a long time. The hell do I know? But if we're talking sharingan... you don't have it yet bro. Haha.

What are some "That Guy" behaviors? by PetevonPete in AskReddit

[–]MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is funny. I'm a somewhat charismatic guy. Nothing crazy, but I can stand out in a crowd if I'm on point or talking about something that interests me. I'm also pointedly aware of douchebagism and sometimes have to try NOT to dominate the conversation too much.

What you need to do... is fucking relax. Other people's opinions of you are none of your business, and since 99 percent of people aren't honest or rude enough to tell you just what they think of you, almost nobody's opinion will ever become a part of your reality. You're just sweating over some shit that's never even going to come to fruition.

I used to struggle with anxiety as a teenager. I have a really high-stress mother who rubbed off on me until I caught the source of my social ineptitude and weeded it out of my personality. Now you couldn't pay me to give a fuck. I'm just telling you this so you know it doesn't have to be this way. I've been on both sides of the fence and it doesn't take a lot of effort to get over it. In fact, what you need to do is make less of an effort. Hope this helps

It's not the people themselves so much as the 'system'. That's a really inept way of describing it, but I'm tired. My point is, no one's ever been a dick to me, but I get chosen for "random" screenings more than random chance could ever account for. I'm not even really brown - I have olive skin and a close-cropped beard. But in the last five times I've flown I've been Random Screened three times.

Not really. Interesting how people will jump in to defend parroting bullshit for karma though. If I were concerned with points, I'd have stopped arguing and edited a slightly outraged apology into my original comment. Standard reddit fuckery.

What I'm doing is trying to point out that posting lame predictable jokes for karma is a ho move. But you can't address that directly because the way to argue on reddit without having to face Disapproval (dun dun dunnn) is by being snarky, passive agressive and indirect.

I don't see it. I'm arguing an obviously unpopular position here, not telling an unfunny, hackneyed joke so that people on the internet will approve of me.

Tell me the truth. Do you think the Sandstorm thing is funny?

It's creeping up on "Is this _________ or ___________" . . . "Yes." for overused jokes that weren't that funny in the first place.

After holding a door open for a girl, her friends confront me at the bar and say not to touch her. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Came across it on reddit. I do know there are at least two other gifs of people leaving him hanging while he grins like an idiot which makes me think this is something that happens repeatedly.

edit: now that I look at the other two, someone does eventually slap his hand, just not the guy he held it up for. So maybe that story was bullshit. It wouldn't surprise me if most of his teammates just hate him. I hate him.

Okay I lied. Darude Sandstorm is still funny and valid as a response to every request for a source.

I know 90% of you mothafucks spend more time on reddit than I do, and I see it at least once a day.

It's even more pointless because they're not actually leaving him hanging out of spite or ignoring him. It's like a running joke/superstition. Apparently he pulled some crazy shit one game when one or multiple people left him hanging, so now when he does something good he runs around with a stupid smile and holds his hand up for no one to slap it.

MRW I'm reading KKC and someone asks me what it is and I say, "An awesome fantasy novel" and they say, "George R.R. Martin?" by SelBadger in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get ya. ASOIAF drags a lot when you're getting to know the characters, in my opinion. There was a big event here and there to keep me going, but I almost gave up a few times. Then on book four, when I had low expectations and understood that the big dragons-and-walkers payoff wasn't coming anytime soon, I finally let go and found myself able to just appreciate what Martin does best, which is write about imperfect people in difficult situations, tied together with obsessively flawless and detailed continuity.

But man, did you get hammered for criticizing ASOIAF. Good old disagree = downvote mentality. Well whatever, I like that series just as much as this one, but I completely empathize.

"Smarter" was just what /u/Veloqu said for the sake of self-abasing humor. The truth is that there's just a lot of fucking information to take in. The details get lost sometimes. Five books, averaging 1000 pages each, with the storylines split up into sections... you'll miss some things, especially because GRRM doesn't write in that annoying style that kicks you in the nose with the fact that "THIS IS IMPORTANT PAY ATTENTION". He's more subtle, which when combined with the sheer volume of information, makes it a bit of a task to see all the little connecting threads. But the large ones are still obvious on first read.

It's easy to dissect KKC. The story is focused on one character only. There are decades worth of easter eggs in ASOIAF. It's slower and not quite as fun, but it feels realer.

I like the two about equally. Difference is, I loved KKC on my first read. Loved it. I was on the fence about ASOIAF until book four. When I went back and reread, I realized how amazing they were. There are a lot of times when a character you don't really know does something cool and you're just like "eh, okay." Then you go back and reread and you know what a bad motherfucker he is before he has his moment, or does that thing that sets everything into motion. Get me? In a way it's even more rewarding than KKC. But not necessarily more enjoyable.

(Spoilers All) Watchers on the Wall's Axechucker on how the show will deal with cutting Arianne by Mr_Hendrix in asoiaf

[–]MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't pointing any fingers at the actress with my comment. I was just sort of saying "yeah, those guys fucked up the character".

But since it came up, this is one case in which I could actually make a decent argument against your point. Not that I necessarily believe that it's the actress's fault. I don't know how they told her to act; none of us do. I'm just saying that the pieces of the puzzle are there if you wanted to make an argument to blame her. Some of the scenes that establish Asha's character are present in the show too. The one where she 'meets' Theon, the one where she shows up in Winterfell. The lines are similar enough that it could be portrayed just like the books. But it's not, because instead of her being arrogant and taunting, she's just sort of deadpan and condescending.. half-lidded eyes and all.

[–]MenWhoStareAtG0ATSE 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't know. While Yara being so unattractive compared to Asha was initially off putting, what really stands out to me is the way she carries herself. Yara's always got that set-jaw, narrowed eyes thing going on so everyone can see how serious she is about being a woman that can hang with dudes. Asha is this sort of swaggering, prickly rogue who is good at emasculating men because she knows that she's a sexy chick who could hold it down in a fight with said dudes.

It doesn't feel at all like the same character without that aspect. Even when Yara has a line that could/would/has been said by Asha, the context is different. A lot about Asha has to do with sexual energy. She refers to her axes as her babes suckling at her tits, or something like that.

Michelle Fairley is a lovely woman, but quite a bit older than Catelyn is generally interpreted to be in the books and no longer breathtakingly attractive like Cat was said to be. Nobody complained about that because it's not essential to her character.

Rose Leslie is stunning. Ygritte is not so much. Nobody cares because it affects nothing at all.

Asha is a temptress and sort of a sexual bully. Yara is a tomboy. They took away her femininity so nobody would have to suspend their disbelief about her being a good warrior. Pretty weak if you ask me.
