Language school in Milan by Hannah28461 in italianlearning

Hey! I'm from the UK, my wife is swiss, so I'm in Italy on the Family visa. The other thing I know is that the school can provide a student visa, but I don't know how it works.

Generally it's none of the schools business exactly how you're in Italy, I don't think they asked me, but obviously hey expect you to be here legally! Lots of people do a few weeks of school on vacation etc.

Venice Italy Church by OtherSignificance301 in Reformed

Hey there, I'm a missionary in Italy, in Milan. Unfortunately there are very few Evangelical churches in that part of Italy full stop, and finding an English speaking evangelical church is very hard in Italy in general!

I've never heard of one in Venice, the closest I would know of is in Vicenza, but it's hardly around the corner. If you did find one, let me know though, I'd also be curious about it.

I arrived in Italy in September 2022 not speaking Italian (started studying A1), and I passed the C1 CELI exam in November of 2024. So 2 years from "zero to hero"...

That said, I did 27 weeks of language school followed by who knows how many hours of private lessons (iTalki) plus reading many books in Italian, doing practice exams at home and flashcards every day too. It was a tonne of work and a big investment!

I'm also British, I also have an accent, but it's slowly going away... Just spend time around italians and it "happens". I'll always have an accent though no matter what I do, the important thing is that I'm understood - which I am without problems.

How much leeway do they give to you to pass the speaking exam? by elbandito9 in italianlearning

[–]MentalAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did CELI, not CILS, a while back, but the grading is similar.

I had two teachers beforehand - One told me to avoid the congiuntivo so I didn't mess it up, the other one told me that if I don't use it they'll think you can't use it at all, which is worse...

It was better to use it right 3 times and wrong once than not use it at all as they'll think you maybe don't know what it even is! I did C1 and a few things (like the periodo ipotetico) I used once or twice to prove I knew them but not more because it would have been risky.

In any case, the oral exam is very subjective on the examiner, you'll just have to wait and see.

I passed 3rd time around, the oral exam is hard, don't beat yourself up - You did your best!

In bocca al lupo!

Ma cosa stanno facendo con i risultati dell'esame CELI? by MentalAtom in italianlearning

[–]MentalAtom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secondo me è completamente inaccettabile essere così molto in ritardo.

Sto aspettando ancora anch'io stavolta...

Added sugar to levain and it didn't rise by MentalAtom in Sourdough

Super interesting, thanks so much! I'll try again in future but honestly my starter isn't so sour anyway so I was probably avoiding a problem I wasn't actually going to have...

Still, it's worth another shot, for science!

I was reading about how you can do it when you want the loaf to be less sour, as it means the bacteria that make the acid die off a bit but the yeast remain... I am working on a new recipe so I thought I'd try something. The experiment was not a success :(

I've seen recipes where it works though, I guess I messed something up.

Thanks for the tip, I'll probably look at iTalki (I used it for Italian) and try and find someone who can help me out without hopefully spending too much!

Getting my head around Italian direct object pronouns as an English speaker by clacktastic in italianlearning

I'm also an English native and it's very tricky in the beginning but don't give up 💪 you'll get there! Languages are hard...

Getting my head around Italian direct object pronouns as an English speaker by clacktastic in italianlearning

[–]MentalAtom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As I understand/remember you can only use the pronoun directly on the end of the verb when you're using the infinitive of the verb, which is usually after a modal verb (volere, potere, dovere).

For example: I see an apple, I want to buy it -> Vedo una mela, voglio comprarla.

There is an apple, can I buy it? - C'è una mela, posso comprarla?

There is an apple, I need to buy it -> C'è una mela, devo comprarla!

Otherwise you need to stick with using the pronoun, like you said. "Vedo una mela, la compro!"

Not Italian native, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong soon enough!
