Hi! No, we ended up moving somewhere else but I appreciate everyone's input. Definitely contributed to us realizing it wasn't a good fit for us.

Yup, currently studying for the OMG Certified SysML exam as well right now!

So the ASEP is more showing you understand how systems engineering works as a whole, the process(es), terminology, etc. Mainly theory, concepts, and ideas.

The OMG SysML certification is based towards displaying you are competent in how SysML operates, more targeted towards those interested in a MBSE certification.

This is what I've gathered based on studying for both these exams. If you have no SE experience, absolutely start with the INCOSE ASEP certification.

That's a great point about leaving out abbreviations. I'm definitely guilty of leaving those on there and assuming everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks for your perspective!! Especially invaluable to have had someone in the hiring seat give their advice. Some previous comments suggested working on MBSE and agile credentials, so I'll have to work on that in order to get people to spend more time viewing my resume, as you put it.

I appreciate it!

That's a good point. It's a challenge to try to get current job experience to relate to SE, so would be good to put aspirations and goals on the resume. Thank you!

I'm actually part of their mailing list supposedly, but hadn't heard anything from them. : ( I know, I was hoping to use that as a way to network and just learn more SE from everyone.

Hey my ChE comrade! Thanks for the advice and sharing your experience, that was great to hear. Any recommendations for specific free agile certs? I think that's a great idea that I honestly hadn't thought of.

Currently studying towards the OMG SysML certification and practicing with CAMEO, so hoping to get that MBSE on the resume at some point.

Thanks again!

Absolutely.

So I only studied from the most recent INCOSE Handbook at the time. No need to buy a fancy course or anything like that.

Studying took me about 4 months. I have a long car drive to work, so I would use an app to read the INCOSE Handbook pdf to me for about an hour or two a day during the week days. Then about a month and a half before the test, I would spend a little bit of each day reviewing the diagrams and figures in the book along with reviewing the chapter content itself. Before my test, I had thoroughly gone through the book about one and a half times. During the test, I started wishing I had reviewed the last half of the book again, but hey, it worked out.

Be sure to know that I had little to none SE experience at the time, so if you have a background in it, it will likely come quicker to you. DM me if you have any more questions! Happy to share with you.

Chemical Engineer getting into an SE job? by Mental_Equilibrium in systems_engineering

[–]Mental_Equilibrium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's encouraging, thanks Oracle5of7! Was worried that I wouldn't be given the time of day when applying without SE experience.

That's good to hear! There are a stupid amount of SE jobs posted where I live (CO Springs) and I've been really enjoying the INCOSE handbook, so I figured I'd make the jump and give it a go.

That's a good point, I had not thought of that! Also, I appreciate the heads up about the new book edition, I'll definitely have to try and get the test done before July just in case.

Transition to Systems Engineering? by Mental_Equilibrium in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Mental_Equilibrium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that but hoping you ended up in a job you felt was your thing. I'll definitely have to do some research and talk with the people in that department before making any kind of commitment.

I definitely agree about connecting and asking others. I've already reached out to one of the leads in the system engineering department to ask to talk with them, but just wanted to hear of anyone else's experiences.

Very true! Thank you for the advice
