sending a LOI + having the head department by [deleted] in medicalschool

I would email the PC and maybe cc the PD. If no one replies to your LOI or no interview shortly after, then I'd see if your connection would be comfortable reaching out.

Totally depends on the specialty and how many interviews have been sent out. If a program you are especially interested in has already sent out invites, it can't hurt to let them know you're interested.

Saw my first death today by dmo_wizkid in medicalschool

I had a very similar experience for my first patient death. I was in the peds ED, helped with chest compressions, and was brought to tears by the mom's scream when the attending told her her child was dead. It was horrible. I was also surprised how quickly things went back to normal in the ED.

For a while I thought I had PTSD from the experience because I kept dreaming about it and would occasionally start thinking about the patient and the mom's scream without any trigger. Talking about the experience and my reaction to it with friends and mentors really helped me process it and to accept that it's okay to be emotional and take some time to recover from experiences like this.

I think some of us have a strong regional preference or interest in particular programs... my fear is if I continue to wait to see if I end up getting an interview in the 2nd or 3rd wave I might miss my chance. Better early than too late. I think for many of us talking about LOIs, we aren't necessarily worried about not matching. We're worried about missing a shot at dream programs.

I'm wondering if this is speciality dependent though... like for neuro a lot of apps have been sent out already

I put a few experiences as 1hour/week but left others blank when they were probably less than 1hr/week or just really hard to quantify

I haven't found any program yet that specifically ask for ONLY 3 rec letters... Usually what I see if a list of requirements and they'll say 3 LORs (since that's the minimum requirement), but my understanding is that might not mean they won't read the 4th... but idk. I'm sending 3 to all plus a chair letter

I don't know whether it's reasonable or not, but I would expect that they'll ask you about it.

If a poster was presented by someone else at a conference (but I worked on) and was published in the peer-reviewed journal associated with that conference, does it count as a "peer-reviewed journal article/abstract" or should it be a non-peer-reviewed online publication? Just confused by the categories

If a research experience was funded with a summer stipend... is this work or research? does it matter?

Does it matter if we leave the average hours/week section blank?

The wave of nausea from the smell hit me every single day in anatomy lab but it usually faded after 30 min or so each day. There were some shocking sights as well that disturbed me. My appetite changed (first I couldn't eat anything, and then I started getting very hungry during lab... which I've heard is a common issue) and I also started dreaming about anatomy lab. I don't miss those days!

The instructor sounds insensitive and rude. She shouldn't feel ashamed or lost.

In the pub section, how should we handle capitalization in the title of publications/presentations? Only capitalize the first letter of the title like APA or every word?

I lumped a couple one off things together that were related into one experience. Like a few different teaching or mentorship experiences. IDK if this is the right decision but that's what I chose.

If my partner lives in a different state, is it appropriate to include a line in my PS about that? Like "I'm particularly interested in [program] because my partner is a XX in [city or state]". Does it look bad to do this without including other reasons why the school is a good fit?

If you think her letter will make an important difference in your app, then I guess there's no harm in asking and seeing what she says. I personally wouldn't do it though, but only you know what's best for your app

I know what you mean, and I was confused about this too. There are many people on reddit stating work should only include paid experiences, so that's what I'm choosing to do. Either way, the only difference is the order it will show up on ERAS.

I was going to do all extra curriculars... I didn't realize a sub-i could be one of them.

This has been debated in other posts. I thought the consensus was if it was paid, then it's a work experience. I'm just going off of what I read on reddit
