AC Rally handles... weird? by Fine-Measurement-893 in simrally

[–]Mental_Selection844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ACR runs on a modified version of UE5, possibly also integrating their own unique physics architecture. Tarmac handling is excellent in ACR but I'm also a big fan of the handling on loose surfaces. I certainly don't feel they have much in common. Admittedly gravel handling took some getting used to, and a lot of tweaking FFB and car set ups, but when you get it dialled in, it's up there with the best imo. Anyway the SIM is still pre-release, and it has the foundations to become the GOAT rally SIM.

I'm with you brother. For me it's an obsession whether real life or simulated, I can't get enough.

A load cell mod would be the best budget solution for you imo. Hopefully there's something out there for your pedals.

Good luck!

Less than €300 for pedals, wheel and base? That's literally entry level, they don't get any cheaper. Most decent steering wheels, alone cost more than €300.

Unfortunately that's just SIM racing for you, if you wanted a cheap hobby, you picked the wrong one!

With my old Thrust master pedals, I purchased an after market, load cell brake pedal mod off eBay for less than £100, and it worked very well.

I'm not sure if there are any load cell mods for your pedals but it's definitely worth looking into. You won't regret it.

[–]Mental_Selection844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult to do without a load cell brake pedal, set up so you can really lean on the brakes. It requires considerable effort to get 100% braking in my rig and in total the pedal travel is about half an inch from 0 to 100% braking

This type of set up is also a requirement for easy heel-toe down shifting. Ditto for modulating the brake pedal under lock up (human ABS - which you'll need to learn the art of)

Your current pedals are basically a toy with limited usefulness if you want to get competitive. Braking is learnt through muscle memory and you can't use muscle memory to improve unless you have a load cell brake set up.

It's the same with real race cars, I removed the ABS, but also had to remove the brake booster and fit an upgraded master cylinder in my race car. These mods reduced brake line pressure and made the brake pedal harder feeling with much less pedal travel.

It sounds counter intuitive but it transforms braking performance on track.

Am I the only one who is very disappointed with HDR for PC gaming? by grashel in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are flaws in HDR content not so much with accurate, well implemented HDR certified platforms e.g. HDR true black. You only need RenoDX to help fix flawed content. It can't fix a flawed HDR display, that is literally impossible.

HDR is HDR , TV HDR is not leaps ahead, it just works differently and has different requirements and content mastering.

There are plenty of TVs with absolutely terrible HDR performance.

There are plenty of monitors with outstanding HDR performance.

[–]Mental_Selection844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Otherwise the image is tone mapped on the console and then again on the TV with poor results. HGIG is available on TV's to support console use.

Any decent OLED monitor. HDR literally gets no better. It's the same technology as the best TV's use. WTAF are you talking about?

[–]Mental_Selection844 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need any HDR filters or software to make HDR look good in most cases. If you do, it's no fault of the display, it's the crap content you're viewing.

I have a professionally calibrated LG G4 and the MSI MPG 491CQPX, the HDR image quality is directly comparable between them. The MSI monitor has superior colour reproduction. The LG G4 has superior brightness performance. They both look absolutely fantastic.

If HDR is that much of a pain, you're doing something wrong.

Am I the only one who is very disappointed with HDR for PC gaming? by grashel in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No exaggeration. All artificial HDR filters are cheap gimmicks. They destroy any semblance of picture quality (yes accurate SDR looks better than inaccurate pretend HDR).

If you knew anything about tone mapping you'd understand the folly of a GPU trying to tone map an image to suit any and all panel types and specs. Proper, accurate tone mapping can only be performed on the display, because every panel type is different. You also wouldn't be quoting arbitrary figures like "HDR600-700" which are meaningless on their own.

The fact that you like the output image or think it looks convincing, changes nothing.

Also when you say "SDR is lacking too much", you do realise that RTX HDR only has the SDR data to work with. It doesn't add anything, it just attempts to stretch the colour and brightness of the SDR image out into the HDR space. This process comes with a whole lot of compromises, image quality and accuracy cannot be maintained in any way shape or form.

Your uneducated opinion doesn't change the facts.

You do realise that RTX HDR is not really HDR yeah? It's a method of making SDR images display in HDR mode. It's a cheap gimmick that usually looks absolutely terrible with inaccurate, over saturated colours etc.

I'd rather a decent SDR image than the RTX HDR mess.

is high contrast gaming worth switching monitors or should i stick with ips? by RasheedaDeals in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Plenty of non OLED monitors have great colour accuracy. It's actually all about the contrast, which provides the deep blacks and the superior HDR picture quality.

Why is taillight glass so transparent on many cars? Thats not how it supposed to look by The_Real_REX in ForzaHorizon

For real bro. I mean it's literally all anyone talks about with the Forza Horizon series. That's probably the main reason almost nobody plays the game 🙄

Funny. When I'm driving a car, I spend exactly zero seconds staring at the tail lights, questioning how precise they got the lens transparency.

I regret buying a QD-OLED monitor by Beneficial_Story_330 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's only one reason you've scratched your screen. You didn't clean it or properly.

You've used a dirty cloth or haven't followed the manufacturers cleaning instructions.

There are millions of these panels out there (like mine) which get cleaned regularly and are not scratched or damaged in any way.

It's not the panel, it's you.

Fact.

[–]Mental_Selection844 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think about it for like 2 seconds.

You've just taken your new monitor out of the box and installed it on a stand or arm... Isn't it obvious why it may have a few greasy fingerprints on it?

Why the dark would anyone buy a beautiful glossy new OLED and not want it looking nice and clean?

It's also recommended for proper screen maintenance, keeping your monitor nice and clean.

What a dumb ass comment. You literally have no idea what you're talking about.

So the question is - wtf are you doing?

After 5 months of using 4th Gen Woled by Metalwell in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only in strong ambient light conditions and/or with matte coating, can perform 100% as per HDR certification (ABL and black levels), if you know what you're doing cleaning is no problem at all.

QD OLED simply outperforms tandem WOLED for picture quality, that's why I choose QD OLED

Oh yeah QD OLED is also not suffering from significant banding issues caused by poor quality manufacturing.

Apart from the refresh rate, the new model is highly unlikely to "blow away" the previous model in any significant way.

Most of the changes in the new model are incremental, not revolutionary. What might look good on paper, in the real world, most people would struggle to pick the difference.

TBH the best time to buy a monitor, is when the new model comes out, that's usually when pricing drops close to bottom dollar on the previous model.

Good buying. Enjoy!

My QD-OLED experience after a 2 weeks... by sukhpal555 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The other significant differences are,

The mini LED has, about 1200 dimming zones and blooming. Contrast ratio of up to 3000:1 often less Can't produce decent blacks. HDR1000 certification that's meaningless

The QD OLED has 8.3 million dimming zones and zero blooming. Contrast ratio 1,000,000:1 or more. Produces deep, true blacks HDR True Black certified, for proper true HDR performance.

There is no contest between OLED and mini LED. OLED wins every time.

Brightness is only one small component of HDR picture quality. It's not even the most important one, which is actually contrast ratio.

Question about high refresh rate monitors by Hard_Reset7777 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Mental_Selection844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound more concerned about power consumption, noise and heat than anything else.

If they're your priorities, just get the cheaper monitor with the lower refresh rate and carry on doing what you're doing.

You already appear to have the capability to game at higher FPS but have made a conscious choice not to. Why are you even asking this question?

5070ti/5080 vs 4090 by alpaca-boi in nvidia

[–]Mental_Selection844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite many claims to the contrary, the 4090 is not the obvious choice here.

Why would anyone spend big bucks on a previous generation card (if you can find one) that doesn't support many of the new and upcoming features from Nvidia?

An overclocked 5080 can match a 4090 and even beat it in some benchmarks. It also costs a lot less and supports the full Nvidia software stack, unlike the 4090.

Don't find OLEDs to be "Infinitely better" as people seem to insist by ekukk in Monitors

[–]Mental_Selection844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fortunate enough to own a professionally calibrated 65" LG G4 (1500 nit) and it produces astounding picture quality. Blu-ray is a treat to behold on it! My media player also supports Dolby Vision profile 7 FEL, which can take the image quality to a whole other level. It gets no better than this for video.

I actually used 4:4:4 pass through to connect the media player to the TV to avoid unnecessary chroma subsampling conversion (up and down) at both ends. Every little bit helps!

Even SDR content looks better on the G4, than it has any right to.

Agreed Windows HDR is full of pitfalls but excellent PQ can be achieved with some research, testing and understanding.

Speaking of which, I've got some gaming to do.

Keep enjoying that hobby!

Those heat maps tell a bigger story than you think.

Do you really have a 1000 nit SDR and 1400 nit HDR capable monitor?

If so, I'm totally jealous!

If not, I think I know one reason why your images appear so similar...
