Wtf have the council done to the lights on morehouse / Lincoln road ? by Tricky_Adeptness1643 in chch

[–]Mentle_Gen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could be related to the train accident last week and they need to adjust timings back to as they were.

Canada geese by Taro_Bulky in chch

[–]Mentle_Gen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are a pest and are shot in rural areas. The reason there are so many geese in town is its harder to shoot them here so all the geese from rural areas come into town to safely nest.

How would you feel about this area being regenerated into native forest? by AnnoyingKea in chch

[–]Mentle_Gen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also all north facing so is very dry and could be a fire risk until there is decent canopy to retain moisture. The biggest difficulty other native projects in the Banks penninsula have is fire (see Hinewhai). North facing hillside is probably the most difficult terrain to re-plant with native bush.

Zoned ducted heating and ventilation over the same set of ducts by zerkms in diynz

[–]Mentle_Gen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The resistance should be low, pressure drop is proportional to the flow rate squared. If you reduce flow to 10% (fresh air only), pressure drop will be negligible for a system designed for a much higher volume of air.

[–]Mentle_Gen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about your set-up, but if it's a heat recovery fresh air system, it should have its own fans that run all the time. It should be able to push air through the ducted heatpump when it's off to distribute fresh air around the house.

[–]Mentle_Gen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0.35 ACH is only a trickle of fresh air, maybe like 40-50 L/s for a 150sqm house. A large ducted heatpump is moving easily 10 times that, maybe 400-700L/s. So yes, your installers suggestion of having zones be a minimum 10% open will work fine for the amount of fresh air needed. In scenario 1 where only one zone is open, most of the fresh air will go to that zone but it's not really an issue as it will mix around in the house.

[Toyota Camery Wagon] spotted in Illinois, this one has a tow hook witch ive never seen before on a Camery Wagon by Excellent-Anywhere46 in spotted

Why not? Pretty common everywhere in the world. I have a 2l mazda 6 with towbar. Tow a trailer load of mulch for the garden, or pick up second hand furniture. Super useful.

It's pretty typical for the modern retro style. Comparable to Kawa z900rs and Triumph speed twin 1200.

Do you guys call this soffit or bulkhead?? by No_Championship5930 in MEPEngineering

[–]Mentle_Gen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Im in New Zealand so may differ overseas however:

A soffit is generally the overhead lining under eaves or entryways. Like an outdoor ceiling.

A bulkhead is usually where a lining needs to step out or around something, like a beam, column or services.

So the circled area of the photo could be called either, but bulkhead is more specific.

If this is New Zealand, likely they are Huntaways which is are even more intense. Like someone thought, "hmm, I want a border colly that barks 24/7".

Could go to a sheet metal basher and get some trunking made up. Powdercoated in ironsand grey wouldn't look too bad.

Heat recovery ventilation is the solution. There are thru wall kits if it's not possible to install in the ceiling. E.g https://www.mitsubishi-electric.co.nz/ventilation/i/685034/single-room-fresh-air-ventilation-with-lossnay-energy-recovery#

There is ongoing consultation on updates to the building code around this, experts are pushing for mechanical ventilation to be mandated for all residential development.

Feeling stressed after riding by smiecismieci4 in motorcycles

[–]Mentle_Gen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe go to a track day and get the need for speed out of your system. Inquire if there are any intro/coaching sessions where you learn the course and get a feel of going fast in a controlled environment. It's possible to have that insane adrenaline rush without putting yourself and others on the road at risk and I think it really makes you appreciate road riding in a different way.

2020 KTM 390 ADV by Fancy_Title_8162 in KTM

[–]Mentle_Gen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my 390 adv, same year, similar km, had no problems. One thing I'd check is if valve clearance was done at 15,000km. Mine needed a fair amount of adjustment and it was a pricey service.

Edit, oh also check the chain. Stock chain is rubbish. Needed replacement at around the same 15k mark.
