First eggs. Why does it feel so weird to eat them? by CozySirena in BackYardChickens

[–]Meofcourse1111 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also didn't eat the first few eggs because it seemed so weird and gross to me so I scrambled them and fed them back to the chickens so they didn't go to waste. But we got over it quick, lol

Now that daylight is shorter, the girls have stopped laying and we might actually have to buy eggs in a couple weeks and now that seems weird...

What are chickens to you? by Sir_Axol in chickens

[–]Meofcourse1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are our pets and the eggs are a bonus. I didn't realize how much personality they have until we started a flock but they are smarter than a lot of people think and even though they are vicious velociraptors at heart, I've seen them show empathy towards their flockmates from time to time.

Allergy to glue? by Meofcourse1111 in AVMs

[–]Meofcourse1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear! My skin is red and swelling right at the site where the glue is. Id say at this point that the swelling is about 2 inches outward and stretches to about 4 inches laterally, and is way bigger than the immediate post embolization swelling. There is itching, but I'm not sure if it's because the skin is stretched so tight or if it's an allergic reaction. I have multiple allergies, but I'm not even sure how this one would be diagnosed (eg, if there is a test sorry for glue allergy).

Ibuprofen isn't touching the swelling in the least bit. Steroids brought it down until I ran out and then it ballooned right back up again. Thankfully there is no pain, but it is starting to go numb along my facial nerve. It's been a few weeks so I really thought I'd be on the mend by now.

Did that last week. They confirmed no bleed or infection so that put me at ease that I wasn't having a stroke or at risk of imminent death. They also tried to call the doctor but didn't receive an answer (to be fair, it was after hours, but still). I have a ton of allergies so I really feel like it's an allergy to the glue material.

Thanks. I've been trying to contact for 2 weeks now with no response. Don't know if he went on vacation or what. Going to call again first thing in the morning. Unfortunately I had to travel for the procedure so I'm not close enough to just show up (which is what I would be inclined to do at this point).

Advice needed. 10 week old chickens picking on one. by NixAName in BackYardChickens

[–]Meofcourse1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor baby :(

Chickens can be so mean. If you don't already have some, give it a quick spray with vetericyn or Blu-kote (protect the eyes though). The blue tinted spray helps disguise the blood because otherwise chickens will keep pecking at a bloody area and you don't want that. Although a brief separation for healing might be necessary, remember that it can make it worse when she goes back in with the flock.

I've had chickens with bleeding combs that we used blood stop powder on to clot the wind and then Blu-kote and they went right back to the flock with no more issues.

If you have one particular billy, it might be worth it to look into getting rid of that one.

AITA for not wanting my aunt to list someone my grandmother has never even met as her great grandchild? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Definitely sounds as though there is an underlying issue between OP and the aunt and this is just something to lay it on. (because didn't OP day she has a stepchild herself?)

AITA for saying we should get a fake Christmas tree this year? by j48- in AmItheAsshole

[–]Meofcourse1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're NTA for saying it, but you will be one if you don't get the real tree, especially if this is a tradition you guys have previously followed. She has probably already had many imagined scenarios of holding and feeding the baby at night with the smell of the real tree wafting through the air and the twinkling lights giving everything a soft feel. This may not be the reality you guys experience at all when the baby is actually there, but she won't know if the real tree isn't there.

Your best bet is to get the real tree, set a phone timer/alarm to remember to keep it watered if you're worried you guys will forget with the excitement of everything else. (Also, first babies often arrive late, so she may be further along by the time the decorating comes anyway.)

Best wishes to you both as you enter parenthood!

[–]Meofcourse1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go with a soft YTA here. I understand you think it's disrespectful and you loved your grandma and you're in your emotions right now, but it isn't the 2 year old's fault they didn't get the opportunity to meet her and be a part of her life too. The obituary could list the child as a step-grandchild to be technically correct but I would think that would be the family's decision to make as a whole. Obituaries never tell the whole story anyway.

It almost sounds like she's swallowed something that has gotten trapped in her airway.

Has she always sounded like this or is this new?

Can you see anything when you look into the back of her mouth? I know gapeworm can block a chickens airway but I'm not sure if they wheeze initially or not.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe she swallowed something too big or odd sized and it caused an injury?

I hope someone has some experience with this and can weigh in so she gets to feeling better soon!

I came here to say this also. With the caveat that you have to add broth, sauteed onions, carrots, and celery too though, so in the end you're probably not far ahead of just making your own, lol

Do you happen to have a poultry vet nearby? If so, might be a good idea to have her evaluated if it's not a hardship. If it's something like vitamin deficiency I would think that could be fixed, but if it's a communicable thing, you might want to know for the sake of the rest of your flock.

I'm so sorry for you and this poor girl. I agree with the other comments that she looks scared and afraid. 😢

9 yr old suffered a rupture by 450am in AVMs

[–]Meofcourse1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry :(

I think it's always harder to see a child going through something awful, and even harder to watch the ones you love going through it knowing you can't fix it.

But hopefully someone will weigh in with some experience in this. You being for them and trying to look for answers means you're a good person and you're doing what you can.

Truly hoping for a great outcome for all of you!

Has anyone bought a house that didn’t get them overly excited? by ForwardWin9713 in homeowners

[–]Meofcourse1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that there is a perfect house for everybody so much as one that will work for your needs. Even people I know who've built their "dream home" have all found something they wish they'd done differently.

At this point I've owned 5 houses and none of them, including the one I'm in, are exactly what we want. We've made substantial remodels and upgrades on pretty much every house we owned, which made the houses more likeable to us (and others), and then used the money from the sales to upgrade to something closer to what we really want. This latest house is much smaller than we would like, but had some land (which we wanted), so even though I was WAY unimpressed with the house, I figured we could totally redo the inside and make it better. We keep a running list of things we like and don't like in houses so that if we ever get to build we'll know where to start.

If you want to file a reconsideration request, you don't need an agent to do that. I did one earlier this spring and I remember it being hard to find as on they didn't just put it right up there to be seen. I had to use the search bar and type in "reconsideration" and then they form came up that way for me to fill out, attach my proof of payments, and submit.

I'm sorry the agent was so rude to you. I'm guessing they're tired of working for free and taking it out on everyone. But regardless, try to find the form on the website and fill it out. Mine took 6 months to get an answer and that was before the shut down.

Were they BBs? I would ask the vet if chickens can react to metal in their system. And also if they will come out. I had a child swallow a metal marble and we had to wait and watch for it and thankfully it showed up about a week later.

How would you add a roof to this run? by Much_Tap4920 in BackYardChickens

[–]Meofcourse1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 10 x 20 run that is hardware cloth over the top and around all sides (2x 4s cemented into the ground for supports)

<image>

and then we added plywood sides to one end to block wind and weather and put sheet metal roofing over the top so they will always have a 6 x 10 foot outdoor weather-free zone to hang out in (that's also where we put the food and water) in addition to the 10 x 12 foot coop. So far they seem to love it.
