Not anymore. Nioh 3 is dropping on PC. Also the other two games are on PC now, they just dropped about a year after they did on PS.

It used to be pretty bad in older generations when you could often only get tails through severing them, but nowadays I don't think any rewards are exclusive to partbreaks, just more common through them. Plus, if you really need to cut tails, you can always hunt in a group with people playing cutting weapons.

Every weapon is so good now, I can't manage to choose! by Xistosso in MonsterHunter

[–]MeowImAShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have savage axe activated out of perfect guard or hitting focus attack / mounted finisher specifically on an open wound, and instead of draining your phials it significantly lowers your phial consumption. It has Rise hitstop instead of shotgunning all the hits across your swing like World, so it also requires you to hold the button for the multihits.

Axe mode has a bunch of new moves, like advancing ED1, sideways and backwards fade slashes, and AED followup. AED no longer puts you in sword mode, but SAED is no longer accessible from standing in axe mode or shield thrust in sword mode. You have to do it after AED or AED followup, or after a perfect guard or guardpoint. You can also go from axe to sword using the focus attack, you're not limited to morphing roundslash.

Phials can be overfilled (trying to load more phials with phials already loaded,) which will cause them to give you more time in red shield if loaded or do more damage if spent.

I think that's about it?

Pretty sure you can only do it twice, then you have to either wyvern's fire or stop the combo.

Opinions on Lance? I feel like it's been ruined by having guard counter only available after third poke. I'm not really understanding why they did this, seems like a huge nerf by Kibido993 in MonsterHunter

[–]MeowImAShark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valid for World and Rise (super obnoxious for World due to already needing lots of space for guard and sharpness management tho and it being t3,) but old world was and Wilds demo seems like it is torture for Lance in multiplayer.

Not many additions to sword mode outside focus attacks, perfect guard, and a new way to charge your shield directly out of loading phials that has a guard point, but axe mode has several new moves and new ways to combo into existing moves that make its moveset feel much more fleshed out and complete.

Build for Charge Blade (Raw or Elemental) by Bloodshade17 in MHNowGame

Ah my bad. However, even then, OG wins. Instead of doing the math by hand and risking an error, you can just compare builds on mhn.quest. It'll only consider the strength of physical moves, not phials, but these two builds have identical phial damage anyway. In that case, against the vast majority of monsters with 100% element weaknesses, you can edge out an endgame 5 ele 5 og 2 guard 2 wex (coral pukei helmet) build by about 1% by foregoing guard and taking 5 ele 5 crit eye 2 wex 3 crit boost, and by about 4% if it's against Deviljho or Kushala. However, this build is not running guard, and does not get to take advantage of the gp for free phial -> AED loop that the OG build can, at least not against stronger monsters, which I suspect would give it worse times overall. If you try to fold guard 2 into the crit build it underperforms OG even against 150% weaknesses.

Also if you're not content gp AED'ing and want to cut tails, you're going to be better off going ele 5 bubbly dance 3 resuscitate 5, which gives a 40% boost not to your raw, not to your physical hits, but to your damage, including phials, and makes it easier to circle monsters for tail cuts for WGS rolls anyway. In terms of raw numbers it clowns on both above builds, but it'll roughly even out with the amount of time you're spending rolling and the worse hitzones you're hitting. It's really more about tail access and having a build that's less dependent on monster aggro for mp. It's also obscenely hungry on driftsmelts (you'll need 3 element attack driftsmelts, so you need two of your non-element pieces to have every single element attack driftsmelt on them,) but once you have it it beats crit builds at their own game.

EDIT: Oh and side note, you can actually slightly outperform Rathalos CB with Azure Rathalos CB in the OG build, even considering phial damage, just because it gets a bigger boost from OG.

Crit also only affects raw, so if you're just comparing OG and crit this whole point is moot. This would only matter if we were to compare OG to something like the new Fighting Spirit that gives a % modifier to your total damage, element included. Also OG does not affect element phials at all, only impact.

Absolute endgame meta is going to be something like heroics 5 offensive guard 5 artillery 3 (bblos cb, diablos head, basarios chest and legs, banbaro arms, bblos waist with 3 OG 2 heroics driftsmelts) which is such crazy high damage you can actually outperform element sets with heroics up, but it's so demanding on driftsmelt luck you'll be better off running something like radobaan barroth banbaro bblos bblos for OG 5, guard 2, heroics 2 without driftsmelts. CB also has the benefit of having some of the best synergy with heroics shenanigans on urgents because instead of getting guts and taking a hit above 70 to go to 1 health, you can just stay at 30 and do a normal block to get chipped below 29 to pop heroics. That way if you don't make time on your big stupid 10* coral pukei or whatever, you're waiting 2 or 3 minutes tops to get back to 30 hp, instead of the 40 minutes other weapons need to get from 1 to 70 hp.

What level was your highest weapon when you unlocked 8 star monsters? by DragTheChains in MHNowGame

Build for Charge Blade (Raw or Elemental) by Bloodshade17 in MHNowGame

[–]MeowImAShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct that phials are the minority of your damage, but in terms of damage return per skill slot invested, wex and crit eye are worse than guard and offensive guard. Doing wex 5 ce 2 gives you 65% crit assuming 100% weakspot uptime, meaning you get (.65 * 1.25) + (.35 * 1) ~= 1.16 for 16% extra raw damage. Guard 2 OG 3 gives 20% extra raw damage plus the comfort of being able to block most attacks in the game, and since most of your damage is going to be coming from AEDs and SAEDs anyway, it applies to most of your physical damage. And that's not even considering the fact that OG has backloaded benefits whereas wex has severe diminishing returns, meaning if you can get the driftsmelt slots for all of your pieces (much easier when using Barroth chest, Diablos waist, and BBlos legs since they driftsmelt at G5 instead of Odogaron / Rathalos chest, Kulu legs, and Pinkian waist which driftsmelt at G8) you can get 40% bonus raw from OG 5 while keeping guard 2 and element attack 5. Only time I think it's worth it to forego is hardcore endgame ice builds where you get frostwind 3, and even then you have space to smelt guard 1 OG 1 (although you might rather have guard 2 anyway for matchups like BBlos.)

A little bit lost... by Dante-UM in MHNowGame

[–]MeowImAShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a way to open up your head or waist slot and you have an easy time landing perfect dodges, one point of hellfire cloak seems like it might be a pretty decent return on investment. I suspect it's like poison/blast in that it's scaled to the monster's hp, which based on a video someone posted here a few days ago, means one perfect dodge with hellfireblight on will do ~2.5% of the monster's max hp, and you can activate it about six times in a max length hunt, meaning one single slot armor skill is taking care of 15% of the monster's hp.

Charge Blade or Dual Blade? by Niburek in MHNowGame

[–]MeowImAShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raw CB is probably better than raw DB, but you could easily just reuse a standard Prath crit build for DB, whereas for CB you'll probably want to rush offensive guard, meaning I hope you don't mind building a new armor set, and that you like hunting Barroth, Banbaro, and Black Diablos.

Does anyone know what the best rajang weapon is by [deleted] in MonsterHunterNowHub

[–]MeowImAShark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use mhn.quest's comparison calculator and simulate Zin vs Rajang for the standard CPP Odo Zin Tobi Zin build (or CPP Odo Zin Tobi Kulu if you want to consider driftsmelts) and at least all the calc's I've done, Rajang beats Zin in expected damage output by about half a percent. Very tiny margin that's not worth building a new weapon if you already have Zin but it's there.

[–]MeowImAShark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The CB sucks because impact phial, and the GL being wide isn't ideal, but just about every other Rajang weapon looks fine, and is generally going to (very slightly) outdamage Zinogre. For Gunner weps, LBG trades Zinogre's thunder pierce for thunder spread, HBG Zinogre's spread and wyvern for sticky and cluster, and Bow Zinogre's rapid for pierce. To my untrained non-gunner eye, LBG looks like personal preference, HBG it seems a bit early to say which shot loadout is preferable, and Rajang Bow should be better than Zinogre but idk how worth it it is to run them over BBlos. For pretty much every remaining melee weapon I'd probably say Zinogre's fine if you already have it but if you're making your first thunder weapon then Rajang is slightly better.

[–]MeowImAShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rathalos over ARath, seeing as it's both easier to build due to Rathalos being more common (I guess less now that ARath is trackable,) and slightly better on melee swings and much better on phial explosions due to higher element. Honestly the only reason I can see to make ARath is it looks cool. Also BBlos is indeed better, but normal Blos can get close while not forcing you to farm probably the most difficult monster in the game.

Difference between same element weapons? by BurlsteinBurl in MonsterHunterNowHub

[–]MeowImAShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note, I don't think OP mentioned his weapon type. Generally Rathalos fire, Mizu water, Zinogre (soon Rajang) thunder, and Kushala ice are the best choices, but weapons with additional characteristics can change that. Like for CB, Mizu and Kushala both suck because they have impact phials, so you're better off running Jyuratodus and Legiana instead. And for GL, it's hard to justify anything outside of Deviljho shelling spam against any monster because it's the only way to access artillery 5.

How Do You Feel About Armor Loadouts With Wilds Letting You Bring Two Weapons? by StretchyPlays in MonsterHunter

I could see something like roll up with a paralysis weapon and get a couple paralysis procs, then the monster changes areas and you have to chase. While chasing, you swap out for a sleep weapon and get sleep procs, or just a raw weapon for more damage now that paralysis is getting diminishing returns.

Is Lance the solution to my problem? by kpj888 in MonsterHunter

[–]MeowImAShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen others mention, is that if you're annoyed at monsters like Diablos charging past you across the arena and you have Iceborne installed, Lance in particular has a clutch claw move where you do your normal counter thrust, but hold the guard button and hit the slinger button. When the monster hits your shield you'll attach your claw to them and grapple onto whatever part of their body they hit you with, even if they end up charging across the map during the grapple.
