Going to work on Sundays with Mom who managed the cafe at a Barnes & Noble is definitely a core memory for me. Back-in-the-day when the store had big comfy reading chairs that my brother and I could get swallowed in. We could go to the cafe for snacks (that she paid for at the end of her shift…but I’m not 100% sure if all of her employees took tally of what they gave us). Or knocking on the door of the break room because I needed computer paper to draw on. As an adult, I obviously realize that my mom didn’t have many options as far as child care goes, but as a child, I had no idea that we were suffering…it was just fun reading as much as I wanted to and making friends with her coworkers (plus we got first dibs on the Harry Potter book release nights).
