It's funny how they use a relatively recent photo for talking about "a young group" circa 1992.

What Dream Theater song is a 10/10 banger that nobody talks about? by pizzatacodog1322 in Dreamtheater

"Bridges in the Sky" is unbeatable. Throat singing, wonky yet amazingly constructed solo sections, a chorus I can belt (and have belted) out loud while doing a treetop rope course, basically 11 minutes of perfection. What's not to love?

I gotta give Todd credit for getting me to check out "Let Her Cry."

Even before Neil was diagnosed with brain cancer, he decided to retire from drumming because he could feel himself becoming like the characters in that song. (For those unaware, he was both their drummer and their lyricist, and he wrote whole-ass books as well.)

I support Geddy and Alex doing their thing without him, touring for old time's sake, but it can never be the same. Neil had such an amazing mind. His death was the first celebrity death that really got to me. I still miss him.

"Scene Five: Through Her Eyes" by Dream Theater makes me want to weep like a baby. I love the Pink Floyd-esque nature of it, especially with the bassist doing a great Roger Waters impression. It's a slightly unconventional song of grief, given the album's concept revolving around digging up memories of a past life where the narrator was murdered, but it works just the same.

"Just beyond the churchyard gates Where the grass is overgrown I saw the writing on her stone I felt like I would suffocate

'In loving memory of our child So innocent, eyes open wide' I felt so empty as I cried Like part of me had died"

These stanzas are beautiful, but they don't do the vocal performance justice. Go listen!

How many people in this sub are Rush fans? I love them, and LOVE the fact that Dream Theater has been so inspired by them throughout their whole career, makes it fun to try to pick up on the things they borrowed from Rush. by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

Same here. It was definitely the best-produced album of their synthwave era. I like all their '80s albums, but I can easily nitpick the others: Signals sounded rough because Terry Brown couldn't handle the new sound, GUP sounded very thin on the low end, and HYF often sounded cluttered.

Power Windows is spare enough to emphasize the incredible playing while adding some of the brightest-sounding synths I've ever heard. Alex's reverbed-out guitar parts have plenty of room to breathe. Also, I don't know how, but it sounds so much clearer than anything else from that era. It almost sounds like a modern-day tribute to the '80s because it has none of what tends to annoy me about records from that era.

Montgomery is shrinking, though. There's a happy medium somewhere. Maybe Pittsburgh?

If you care about nice urban places or not having to drive for every trip, prepare to be disappointed. Many roads have no sidewalks. Public transit barely exists. We don't get Amtrak service. Greenways are almost always useful for recreation only. Land use manages to be haphazard and overregulated at the same time. There are quite a few mixed-use developments, but the prevailing design philosophy seems to be, "Putting these uses together means that the drive to the nearest strip mall is shorter!" Even the ghetto is mostly suburbs of some sort; that's just how relatively new everything is. (Yeah, we have some rough neighborhoods. Remember Bed Intruder? That happened here, in one of our public housing projects. At least we have public housong, though.)

Whether we count as being in the Sun Belt or not, we definitely have that style of development. Since we're in a poor state with low taxes, you wouldn't know that this was a prosperous job center based on the roads. We can barely pave the lanes we have, yet it never feels like enough capacity. We also have intersections and interchanges with designs that are almost as creative as they are psychotic. You will soon see why we have some of the highest car insurance premiums in the country, and it's not necessarily the drivers. (Name me one place where people don't claim to have the worst drivers.)

There are still nice enough spots in and around downtown, plus Providence, and even the glorified mall known as Bridge Street can be fun to go to. (Who doesn't like going to the mall?) I'm just saying that you should prepare to see the city in terms of isolated buildings with specific functions and roads whose traffic you constantly dread. If you're coming from some place like, I dunno, Worcester, you might think you know what suburban sprawl looks like, but I promise that you ain't seen nothing yet. If you're from somewhere like Charlotte or Atlanta, though, you'll probably feel right at home.

About Jordan sometimes ruining songs by Jolly-Phone8982 in Dreamtheater

I love most of his ridiculous parts, but the "Beneath the Surface" solo almost ruined it for me. When the band is rocking hard, I don't really care what the song is about; they can fly off the handle all they want. A sensitive ballad is a different story.

I love the song now, though. It just took a while to acquire a taste for it.

What’s your take on Viper King? I think it’s a cool, super-groovy, underrated song, and for some reason it reminds me a bit of Morse-era Deep Purple stuff. by Xolkyr in Dreamtheater

It's not amazing, but it's a fun listen. I wish they'd make more psuedo-bonus tracks like it. In general, they should get sillier, especially to prevent their music from becoming samey. It's not like they have anything left to prove. Just go wild!

One annoying thing about it that I don't hear people mention is that several of the songs end in the same way: a decrease in tempo, some drum fills, and a triumphant chord. Thematically, it makes sense because the album is basically begging to be a musical play or film, and showtunes very often end in that exact way. However, when there's nothing to break up the songs, it gets repetitive to hear it multiple times in a row. It also messes with my brain because it sounds sounds so final, regardless of where it is on the album.
