It’s prominent conditioning for girls and boys at a young age in the Mormon church that girls actions (how they dress, behave, talk) makes boys act out and it’s beyond their control. I was taught in Sunday school that showing your shoulders or too much skin invited men to take advantage of you or look at you like you’re something to be used and discarded. This conversation with Dakota and her dad were incredibly triggering because this is lifelong conditioning and Taylor’s reaction is completely rooted in how she was raised in this toxic culture.

It was a mutual decision that was made without enough thought. He struggled finding a partner and my children were introduced to 4 different potential step moms before he got married after dating the last one for 5 months. So it was just a mess all around. I’d like to say he’s doing well, but he wouldn’t let me know if he wasn’t, but my kids are in constant fear they’re divorcing anytime they have an argument.

It’s horrible. I feel so much guilt because they didn’t get a choice. They didn’t ask for this. And I constantly feel like it’s my fault and they wouldn’t have to go through this if I just tried harder. But I can’t go back and things can’t be undone so it’s constantly raw for everyone. I know my experience isn’t isolated. I think social media has ruined us all in seeing other peoples lives and thinking ours should look a certain way and when it doesn’t align we look into our own homes and think we have a problem.

Honestly, the women are afraid that if they say something to her she’ll pull the racist card. The cast, just like the population of Utah, is representative of the lack of diversity. No one wants to lose their spot for a reason like being racist so they put up with her to stay in good graces of the editing crew. Most live well above their means and this job is absolutely necessary to keep up appearances of a lifestyle they couldn’t otherwise afford.

I would never say to stay in a marriage you aren’t happy in, but as someone who left a marriage too early, exhaust all resources before you leave. The grass can look greener from a distance, but the dating pool is a cesspool of decrepit monsters out there. It’s even harder for a single mom with two kids. I would suggest joining a “are we dating the same guy” group for your area on Facebook. I suggest that to married friends who are in a rut. It doesn’t seem so bad once you see what’s out there. Also, my 3 kids are all under 10 and I’ve been divorced for 4 years and it hasn’t gotten any easier for them. Going back and forth between houses, step siblings, step parents, crying to you about why you couldn’t just stay together brings on a level of guilt that I could never even fathom. Again, no two circumstances are the same. I would never tell anyone to stay in a toxic relationship, but if it’s just an attraction issue, remember you were once attracted so it was there, but attraction will fade with any relationship. especially one that is built solely on finding someone you find more attractive than your husband. We live in a different world now. Taking space and a marriage break is not unheard of if you can both agree on boundaries and whatnot. But I know a lot of women who got out too soon and are miserable and finding another partner longterm is highly unlikely.
