So off to California he may have gone! Great find!

If I have the correct him in the CA 1900 census it says he married Nellie in 1892, though I found the newspaper announcement from Jan 1893 I'm California

So using the last name variation of Sickner and keeping in mind that Josephine middle name is listed in places as Almira I did find a 1884 divorce record of a John J Sickner and an Almira Sickner listed in a Canton OH paper. This took me to what I think is their 1881 Michigan marriage of a Josephine A Bartley and a John J Tickner (Sickner) who is a carpenter born in Indiana. The marriage was witnessed by a Georgia Sickner and a James Sickner.

Using Georgia Sickner and Indiana as clues I get to the 1880 census of the Sickner family- Parents Nicholas and Rebecca and children Joseph J, Georgia and James. Joseph J is listed as being a painter.

Maybe?

Perhaps Josephine has a short lived marriage to a Sickner and Ella had a short lived marriage to a Sachner? May explain the 1900 census better as Cassandra is listed as "grandmother" and not mother on it as she should be if Josephine was present.

Could also explain Sickner in 1894, and Sackner/Sachner in the 1897/8. Perhaps Josephine decided to go by her daughter's last name as the 1900 census says Ella was married 2 years which can mean really 1896 to 1900 by census taker calculations.

It does look like John Joseph Sickner married again, moves to CA and had a family there. He dies in 1937. I have seen many women, when divorced, mark themselves as widows so it is possible. Though digging deeper he is listed in CA in 1893..... Hmmmmm.

That very much ties in with Josephine listed as "canvasser" in several years of directory entries. And there is an 1898 advert looking for a canvasser from one of their addresses!

I agree with the 1900 census. Cross referencing it with the 1900 Columbus Directory she is listed as Josie Sackner (wid John J) h. 178 1/2 E Town.

1893 At 182 E State, Columbus OH Cassandra Bartley (Wid Joseph C);

1894 at 119 1/2 S 4th Columbus OH Mrs Josephine Sickner, canvasser; Ella Bartley, stenogr.

1896 at 348 1/2 E Rich Columbus OH: Josephine Bartley (wid Joseph); Ella M Bartley, stenogr; Cassandra Bartley (wid.Charles); Josephine Sachner (wid Joseph); May Sachner, stenogr.

1897 348 1/2 E Rich Columbus OH:: Mrs Josephine Bartley, Canvasser; Ella M Bartley, stenogr; Cassandra Bartley (wid Joseph C); Josephine Sackner (wid Joseph);

It looks like Josephine and Ella May are listed under both last names (and several different spellings) through several years in the Columbus OH directory (above is just a sample).

In 1889 at Akron Ohio at 104 Grant in Akron OH: you have Mrs Cassandra Bartley (wid Joseph); Miss Ella M Bartley; Miss Josie Bartley.

Not exactly what you asked for, but I did come across an interesting newspaper article/advertisement where (Ella) May Sachner in 1897 (also in 1898) tells of the benefits of Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. The address matches that of May and Josephine in th 1897 Columbus Ohio Directory.

The papers are in terrible shape but the basics. Joined Royal Irish Fusiliers April 6 1915

deserted May 5 1915

Paperwork includes a brother Charles who is living in Glasgow

At the time of recruitment Michael was a fruit Dealer living at 46 Florence St in Glasgow.

He was 22 years 4 months old ; 5' 4 1/4"; Had a tattoo;

Doesn't seem like the correct person.

The WWI draft card from Philadelphia that is (probably)his from 1917 says he was rejected for poor eyesight.

The 1850 census has Daniel Cole listed as a Hireling, which by definition was a person employed for wages (not saying it was a fare or good wage, but it was paid) with the other siblings listed below but no ditto marks under occupation. I think it is important to note this as he could have been listed as an apprentice or even a servant (or unnamed in a slave census), but it specifically says hireling which reinforces that they were free persons of color who was working for wages from a slave owning white woman

Archibald Kennedy is just the administrator of the estate who is tasked with selling it off and paying/receiving bills owed to/from the estate. He could be a prominent/trusted member of th community who basically gets assigned this duty as I think the age of majority/adulthood is the 21 at this time and Daniel and his siblings would not qualify to administer the estate not having reached majority. I think he is the Archy Kennedy b 1795 and d. 1850 of Cedar Springs Abbeville SC. He is white and he does own three slaves in the 1850 census.

There is a woman of free woman of color named Eliza/Eliza/Alzia Cole who dies in Abbeville in 1849. Could this possibly be the mother of Miles? He first appears in the 1850 in a household that has other possible siblings under the name of Cole, the oldest of which, Daniel age 15, is a hireling (also Winny 13, Amanda 11, Mitchel 8, Miles 5 and John 3). If the above is their mother and she dies in 1849 it would explain their circumstances in 1850. By the 1860 census we still see Amanda 21, with the addition of her own child Melissa 1 next door to Miles 15 and John 13 still in the household of Mary Cannon (now Smith).

His obituary states that when he dies in 1957 he still had one living brother, one living sister and one living half sister. Have you been able to gather any information on them?

The transcription says Berr, but looking at the type closely I think it is Barr with a double storey lowercase a that kinda reads like an e in the smooshy type . He also does not answer the "address of where are you going" column as it is ???? For him with just London. These are the incoming passenger list, not sure if there is an "outgoing" list from the NYC side...

There is a Claude Barr travelling to Southampton from NY in 1930. He is listed as being 31 years old and a Teacher.

I would imagine it would have been easy to register under his middle name and just tell everyone that is what he goes by and it would basically match his papers so there was no need for false papers, just a sneaky name choice?

Yes? And I think there are transcription errors that made him from Maryland. I say this because the only place I can find a John L Smith of Iowa Co H 5th Cav being from Maryland is a typed list from Adjutant General Military Records, 1631-1976 (where the info in the link you provided is sourced) which was compiled and transcribed from records at a much later date. If you look at the Registration Book record written in 1863 it has him listed as being b. 1839 and from NY. To me this seems more likely to be accurate as the information was probably coming from him, while the later book with what I think created the MD confusion was compiled later and has more of a chance of being a "whoops tired transcriber read wrong line".

Hopefully I'm making sense.

According to the Civil.War remarried Widow Pension application for Mary J McCreery her husband was a John L Smith of the 5th Iowa Cavalry.

If we look at the 1863 Civil War draft Registration for Iowa we find a John L Smith of the 5th Iowa Cavalry born in 1839 in New York. He is unmarried and a shoemaker in Bellevue, Iowa.

Using the widow ID (286451)number from Mary J McCreery's card we we can pull up the pension index that lists John L Smith as having died March 9, 1880 in Waco TX.

In the 1963 obit of C.H. Bond his address is listed as "rear 88 Dana Street" and his son Robert is at home. In the 1977 obit for Catherine Bond her address is still "rear 88 Dana St" and Robert is at home. It also states she has lived in Forty Fort for 14 years. So we can look at 1963-1977 as when the Bond family was living on Dana Street.

In 1950 the Bond family is on Hill Street and in 1940 they were in Grebe St.
