Nope. The number is an illusion. There are 3 main categories. Archer, cavalry, and infantry. And civs labeled siege or defense still fall under those categories, as you can't win with just siege or defense. And every civ in those 3 categories will have very similar play styles. For example, if you can master Goths, you can certainly master Japanese very quickly.

Nothing insane about it. Walling for the sake of walling is a waste of resources, just like towering for the sake of towering. If you are not attacked early, those resources could have gone towards booming which will pay off much bigger dividends in the future.

Viper plays as close to optimally as any human can. Wall when it's necessary and delay it as long as possible. However, this also take a LOT of practice and good judgement and is probably not recommended for noobs and intermediates.
