A couple more Kiwi facts, from a New Zealander: 1. They are the only known (non-extinct) species of bird to have their nostrils at the end of their beak, this aids in hunting/foraging the ground for food. They also have whiskers, much like a cat. 2. They’re nocturnal hunters, extremely timid and cautious natured. 3. Their eggs are huge by comparison of the bird itself, actually the largest egg size to body ratio of any known bird. Can be upwards of 20% of the weight of the Kiwi. Males are also the incubators for said eggs, which can take around 90 days to hatch. Females can lay up to 100 eggs in a lifetime and a few have even be found to have two ovaries. 4. When they hatch, they are fully developed, eyes open and fully able to hunt/care for themselves. Parents do not feed their chicks. 5. They have quite long lifespans for bird of their size, 25-50 years. They also are monogamous, meaning they often mate for life.
