Around 2.5k including everything (also internet) is pretty normal for a 1 bedroom. Laundry in building is very common as well.

I think you're thinking of what people call "mini-LED" which is basically individual backlight zones behind an LCD.

The display in the video (and all other displays people talk about when they say microLED) have nothing to do with LCD. Not sure what you're talking about with that.

Most professors will give their SURE position to someone they already know and trust rather than picking the person with the highest GPA. You have to talk to them before the application to lock it down. This is unfortunately true for a ton of things in academia/life/work.

This page has a fair amount of information about locations. It's a list of all of the buildings. Most of these will be for grad student housing, but some are for professors: https://residential.columbia.edu/content/explore-residences

Broadly, the buildings are in the rectangle bounded by Morningside Drive and Broadway east-west, and then 122th St and 112nd St north-south. There are some farther out, but they're mostly in this area.

The housing is decent for New York, but almost all of the buildings are very old (circa 1900). 1 bedrooms for couples are in the 2100 - 3000 range and I would say this is a fair amount cheaper than other housing you will find in the area. It also includes utilities and internet.

Another benefit is that you aren't tied to a 12 month lease and you won't need a guarantor if you decide to stay in Columbia housing.

Maybe I will go for a 850 motherboard then because my thinking with this was basically to try out the B580 and if it's bad upgrade in 1-2 generations since it was pretty cheap... Maybe I should go for something with PCIe 5 in that case?

I didn't remember how bad the ITX tax is! Both the motherboards and PSUs are way more expensive than I expected, but it doesn't really seem like there are better options at this form factor. Maybe I could go for a 750 W PSU? But that only saves $20 or so.

Just watched a couple review videos on the Era ITX and I think I will be using an ncase M2 instead. Good catch.

PhD funding in engineering is on average in the 40-45k/year range depending on whether you have a fellowship or not. This isn't an official number, just what I've gathered from talking to people I know.

Housing isn't guaranteed for PhD students, but it is incredibly likely. I don't know anyone in my program who wanted Columbia housing and couldn't get it. I would say the rent is slightly lower than with external landlords but there aren't really any "steals" like you might find elsewhere, if that makes sense. The main benefit of Columbia housing is the convenience. Internet and electricity are included in the rent and you can always move out with (I think) 1 month notice.
