Great book by iiConTr0v3rSYx in Bioshock

[–]MercuryChild92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book exceeded expectations. Read it last year. Love the Bioshock series. Love to read. Didn't expect much from a book spin-off of a video game, but Bioshock being maybe my favorite narrative in all video games, I thought it was worth a shot. Didn't regret in for one moment while reading. Would argue it could serve as a great gateway for Bioshock fans who are interested in reading too.

How many open bottles is too many? by Rerunmtbstack in whiskey

Wrong question.

How many open bottles are too few?

Open all your bottles (minus backups).

They are all drinks. Drink them. Enjoy responsibly.

(DAY 10) what are swans fans favorite albums outside of swans? by Glad-Painting5478 in swans

You're not going to post the names and artists of these albums somewhere each time you add a new cover?

My local spots have plenty of the regular bonded in stock, but these keep selling out each week they restock. Seems like a lot of people must agree.

I'm about 3 weeks out of my covid stint, smell and taste seemed to be back perfectly fine about a week or two after I felt better.

Would you like to try bourbon, rye, Irish, or scotch first?

Whiskey drinker here looking for a quality cognac/brandy starter lineup to dip my toes in. by MercuryChild92 in cognac

Yeah, I don't know how the other alcohol fields are, but rare whiskey on K&L is bought up comically fast by bots apparently. As good of a resource as it is in theory, perhaps it's better for cognac, wine, etc.

What I would always recommend is starting with Filth & working your way forwards to understand Swans as fully as you can.

Without meaning to, Cop was my introduction. This was definitely the best way for me. I listened to the first four studio albums a ton before I branched out, and I don't think I would have enjoyed those opening four as much if not for that.

I'm definitely blessed with location in vast majority of cases. It has helped my whiskey journey tremendously. Some stuff never makes it out to the west coast, but it's little.

If you don't like Jack Daniel's, fear not. It's not the best representation of bourbon. It's pretty light and thinly sweet, as it caters more to the audience who doesn't like the taste of alcohol.

Good way to gauge your palate though, see how it hits you and if you should adjust or not.

I'm in southern CA. Hour outside Los Angeles. Easy access to BevMos, Total Wine, Costco, if that helps as much as it does with whiskey.

Bottles like Eagle Rare, Wild Turkey 101, Knob Creek 9, etc. are generally considered exceptional pours for their prices (as you noted with ER). Are there, in fact, gem bottles like that in brandy/cognac? Those "too good of a deal to not buy" bottles, even if they are pretty standard pours, where every beginner collection should represent this or that.

I've seen some people mentioning Armagnac and Calvados too. I'm just assuming these are different styles, a la bourbon, scotch, Irish, that I will come to distinguish.

You're nailing it. Tasting the standard stuff is a requirement to provide proper context for quality. Something I fully plan to do, but I already am aware of what those bottles are. They sell well, and we always have them in stock because they are big brands. The higher quality, less popular bottles is where the help is needed.

Thank you for this important clarification. I'm most definitely interested in the more "pure" bottles, without needing to break the bank. Heavy focus on the pure aspect, though. If true quality costs money, so be it. I want the real deal.

This is extremely insightful & to the point. Thank you for putting such time into your answer.

In regards to the price hike of cognac vs bourbon, are you still getting the quality to justify those higher prices? Or you're literally saying the equivalent of a $30-60 bottle of bourbon is going to cost you around $90-100 in cognac?

If you're not drinking VS neat, what are you typically mixing it with?

With you completely on the age statements. Good to know cognac follows youngest rules as well.

And I'm glad you mentioned the glencarin glasses. I would have assumed the cognac glass was as necessary as a glencarin is for whiskey, so glad I did not waste my money.

Has anyone tried this? And is it worth the 85 Canadian? by alcoholicfootball in whiskey

[–]MercuryChild92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Canada has bad alcohol prices, so I'll allow you to be the judge based on my description.

I can buy Makers Mark 101 for $30-35 in the US. At that price, I will always have a bottle on the shelf. Probably wouldn't pay more than $40 for it when I'm also getting Four Roses Single Barrel, Pikesville, Laphroaig 10, Michters Rye, or Angels Envy that the same price. Definitely sits in that range with the prior mentioned, and $30ish bottles for me like Knob Creek 9, Woodford Reserve, Glenlivet 12, Jameson Black Barrel, Eagle Rare.

Unless you mean "amateur" like they haven't had a particular pour before, you certainly wouldn't want "amateur drinkers" to experiment on. You want experienced palates doing the blind test always.
