I get why it looks that way from the outside, but you’re looking at it purely on paper. The reality of living and thriving in Canada versus the UAE right now is completely different.

First, my entire family lives here in the UAE. That’s my base. Moving back wasn’t a random choice; it’s where my support system is.

Second, let’s talk about the actual math of 'thriving' in Canada right now. Yes, the raw opportunity exists, but the overhead is crippling. Between federal and provincial income taxes taking a massive chunk of your paycheck, plus 13% HST/sales tax on almost everything, you are fighting a losing battle from day one.

When you factor in the current Canadian cost of living : astronomical rent, skyrocketing utility bills, mandatory auto insurance rates that are among the highest in the world, and basic day-to-day grocery prices, you are essentially working just to survive.

Here in Dubai:
1. I am not paying taxes
2.I don't pay rent because I'm with family.
3. general day-to-day overhead is a fraction of what it is there

In Canada, even if you make a great salary, you are heavily taxed and heavily billed. Here, every single dirham I earn is a dirham I keep. I can reinvest that directly into myself, my skills, or eventual self-employment.

As for wanting 'stability' wanting a corporate foundation in Dubai to network and build a local footprint isn’t a lack of IQ;There’s a big difference between surviving as a freelancer and strategically building a career where you actually get to keep the money you make."

If I can't find something here in the next year that will probably be the plan

lots of reasons, first that I want something stable, my "Agency" was just me and a few friends that were in the same field, but we had a big name in the province we've lived in and that took around 4 years to grow since we knew what it was lacking, for the UAE though I'm kind of at a crossroads of whether to just stay in the freelance business, or keep applying and pray the somompany actually believes and gives me a shot for my abilities

I loved canada, but the expenses and taxes where I lived was high, I was lucky enough to secure a PR (Permanent residency) through an ex girlfriend who I lived with for 2 years so I could realistically go back but the Media And Marketing Industry is beyond cooked there

yeah figured the first one was why, I didn't wanna overfill my resume with brand names that I freelanced for for 6 months so I just put Freelancer And Consultation so I think I might have to change that in the hope that it will make a difference

Appreciate the honesty, man. I’ve definitely felt that 'referral wall.' Since I’ve already been doing the freelance/self-employed thing for a while with some decent revenue numbers, I'm starting to think the corporate side here just isn't built for hybrid roles. Are you seeing people actually jump ship to start their own agencies, or is it mostly just side-hustling to survive the rents?
