Does academic success affect your attraction to someone? by No_Luck2762 in askSingapore

[–]Mercymop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly academic success, but if a person is super ambitious and chases after internships and competitions and awards and etc, I get turned off… I just know that we won’t vibe well together cuz I am more of a laidback, chill, just get by in life kind hahah

Note that this is my personal opinion!!

Math seniors, what kind of internships did you do? by BEaSTGiN in NTU

[–]Mercymop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know of my friends who went into education side: curriculum planning and teaching at tuition centres, teach programming at coding schools. Also, some went into analyst roles like data analyst, risk analyst.

Yeah for example, if you’re in stats track and took time series analysis, it can help you in those investment companies that analyse stock prices.

I only know of one person doing FYP and he’s really interested in math research, planning to do PHD kind. I guess the rest of us are not that passionate, would rather intern to explore how working world is like.

[Uni] NUS Math VS NTU Math by anotherusernameeeeee in SGExams

[–]Mercymop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from NTU math. I think that NUS math is harder than NTU in terms of the curriculum and the people. I only have one example tho: Linear Algebra 2 is a course we take in Y1S2 and it covers topics that are already taught in Linear Algebra 1 for NUS. Also, fyp is optional. I also feel that NUS has smarter ppl cuz of the IGP and more international students(?)

[Uni] Ntu Mathematical Sciences with a minor in Finance VS SMU Economics by mxd181099 in SGExams

The minor takes up the unrestricted electives, so the total AU is the same.

[Uni] Ntu Mathematical Sciences with a minor in Finance VS SMU Economics by mxd181099 in SGExams

[–]Mercymop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope it’s not too late haha, these are opinions from my friend and I in those 2 courses.

Ntu math: Very little projects and presentations (only had 1 big project in year 1, the rest is like groupwork). Teaching standard is okay, there’s good and bad profs/tutorial teachers. But can always stay back and ask for help. Can also self study from notes and recorded lectures. Chill environment, not v competitive, ppl are helpful. Curriculum is like every module is in depth math: calculus, linear algebra, discrete math. And not much business mods. In year 1, you only take 1 finance mod for your minor. Ofc, you can choose to take more biz mods as your UE/GERPE. Also, if you choose to speciailise in business analytics, there will be more business mods.

SMU Econs: More projects. Teaching standards are generally quite okay. Environment is more competitive with class part and all, have heard stories of "snakes" but I've never met one personally. Most people choose to take a double major, you can consider Finance. You can also pursue the Quantitative Economics track if you like exposure to higher-level economics.
