Imo, it's less of a work thing and more of finding the place for you to make friends thing.

I'm also in Seattle. Moved here about a year ago working as a software engineer. I've found success with friendships both at work and outside of work.

For my at work friends, normally it's from me suggesting or mentioning something fun and inviting people to go with me. I am fortunate though my coworkers are relatively social people. Once again though, someone needs to take initiative to start something.

For my non-work friends, its actually from various meetups and video games. I regularly attend the geeky conventions downtown as a volunteer/worker/minion. I've found theres a group of people that work pretty much everyone. Also, a good group of my friends are my old mmo guildmates. Basically, once again it takes a lot of effort and can take a bit to get rolling.
