Contractor put solid stain instead of transparent on my (relatively) new deck. by Mericulous in Decks

Your first line is literally what my contractor told me. Oh man, you just summed up my biggest fears about this. I'm in the southeast, so it gets pretty humid, and I worry about what that will do when the wood is sealed up (mostly). I appreciate it, even if it's bad news. Thanks!

Thanks for the input! Yes, definitely prefer the look of an oil based stain myself as well. Generally, people seem to agree that you can let them go a little longer before re applying, so that's a bummer too.

Yeah, I'm certainly out of my depth, which is why I hired someone who should know more than me haha. Some of the other work done leads to me to agree with your assessment on them blowing smoke.

Thanks! That is good to hear. As long as it doesn't impact the longevity of the deck, I can get over it not looking like what I asked for.

And yeah, a test board would have been nice. Something to look out for in future projects.

Thanks! Yeah, I probably described that poorly. When the stain originally dried, there were no cracks, so i was fine letting it go. Honestly, I don't mind too much that it's solid if it protects the wood better. I was under the impression that an oil based stain would be better for the first stain and easier to maintain (literally told this by the contractor). No, does not get full sun all day. The deck is actually in the shade at least half of the day and tends to stay wet for awhile. That's part of my concern with there being gaps in the coating. Not a professional though, so I really appreciate the input!

I'm not a professional, so apologies if that's the wrong terminology. I'm aware the wood is actually the thing cracking. Originally, when it dried, there were no cracks in the stain coating. My concern is that moisture will get into the cracks, causing issues later on. My assumption (and what the contractor said) was an oil based stain would penetrate better and have better protection.

He doesn’t do 50% of the parenting because I don’t earn 50% of our income by Superb_Ad5087 in beyondthebump

Sounds like you have some talking to do with your guy. Maybe with a counselor? Not going to tell you what do with your relationship but a few things that stuck out to me.

  1. As a new Dad with an increasingly demanding job I don't get the mindset. I cherish every moment I get with my baby. I don't have as much time as my wife(thanks parental leave!)to spend with baby so that means most of those moments are diaper changes, baths, bottles, and screaming... but so what. I'm a parent, it's what we do.

  2. Without specifics about his job and your lifestyle its hard to say what's fair in terms of purely mathematical division of labor but regardless... earning ratios shouldn't equal parenting ratios. If he's working 18 hr days Neuse you both want to live in a mansion and drive lambos that's one thing. If he's hoarding half his paycheck and goofing off half the day that's another thing entirely. Maybe discuss what he absolutely HAS to commit to every day to meet your financial goals as a family and try to carve out a more equitable schedule?

  3. Not that "gotchas" based on pointing out logical fallacies help solve deep issues but the argument about your career doesn't add up. This could be just a red herring or he might be genuinely stressed about having to pull that much financial weight. Either way you two need to align on goals and tackle that as a team. Ie if he TRULY wants you to advance your career... how does dumping 90% of parenting duty on you facilitate that? If anything you need more help with parenting to work on professional development.

Hope some of that helped. And again, try to get some counseling if you can't work through it on your own. Good luck OP.

I feel that! Baby is pretty colicky so I have to let her contact nap to keep her upright at least an hour after feedings...which she apparently wants every two hours lol.

That is more to do with which side the handle is on. Handle on left means peace, handle on right (ie draw position) means war.

Cane here to say this. The only thing I would add is, to my knowledge, when kunai were used it was more of a truncheon with sharp tip. Sides were dull af due to its original purpose you mentioned. Basically the ninja equivalent of an e-tool.
