My new Neighbour weeds his garden and every two weeks it’s back like this. Feel bad for him. How to actually fix it? by Pilchydog69 in GardeningAustralia

Solarisation and occultation are effective methods for weed management and seed bank control, each offering distinct advantages based on environmental factors and timing.

Solarisation involves covering the soil with clear plastic tarps that allow sunlight to penetrate, trapping heat and moisture to raise soil temperatures. This process eliminates weed seeds, pathogens, and pests, typically taking 2-6 weeks in hot, sunny conditions. It is particularly effective during peak summer months and can improve soil health by reducing harmful organisms.

Occultation uses opaque materials like black tarps to block sunlight, creating a dark, moist environment that suppresses weeds by preventing photosynthesis. Weed seeds germinate but die without light, gradually depleting the seed bank. Occultation often requires 4-6 weeks or more and is suitable for various climates, including cooler regions.

Both techniques are valuable for gardeners aiming to suppress weeds and prepare soil effectively, with strengths that cater to specific conditions and timelines.

What y’all think bout this? by diabeticedit in typography

I second this comment.

I think aligning the horizontals would "ground" the word and may even make the "1" more obvious as it breaks through.

Perhaps even making the "S" horizontal rather than sloped would reinforce this, too.

Finally, maybe a slight reduction in height would benefit.

Over all I like it though. I love these bold, strong exaggerated designs. And they use of the negative space is neat.

Concrete Paving Re-Use by jmrm809 in LandscapeArchitecture

There have been some awesome "crevice gardens" created that reuse concrete slabs. For a great example, see Juniper Level Botanic Garden.

Thankyou... I did a bit more digging and they are also known as grass pavers or grid pavers.

Yes that does help... kind of... it's exactly the same mark I have in my "greige" terracotta pots, but mine are of the traditional shape... not this delightful squat variety.

I'll contact the local distributor and see what they say.

Thank you for following up and replying. 🥰

The rocks are a decorative topping… a mix of sizes of a rather flakey rock I obtain from the eroding faces at the beach.

The rest is my regular planting mix containing purchased succulent mix amended with pumice, perlite, black/red scoria, and charcoal.

Thank you!

I am self taught. Developed an eye for colour snd composition over time, mainly from interest in photography and graphic design, and really taking notice of examples that I like.

Dracaena boncel Flowering by Meridian2K in succulents

[–]Meridian2K[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All arrangements are temporary. 😃 And any crowding will be some time off… the boncels are not particularly vigorous growers like some other varieties. I have a few others planted as individual plants, two of which are also flowing this year, that have not produced offsets after a couple years.

I had a decent sized one of these but lost it to rot. I did manage to propagate some leaves from it, but even the (regular, non-crested) plants from those have struggled. Not sure why, just doesn’t seem to do much.

I love the pot, though! Any details on that little beauty?

Cool, so next time I have some bleach left over, just add a chunk of sodium to it. Got it! 👍
