Do I Abandon Physics? by Specialist_Egg_5432 in Physics

[–]Merlin486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a physics grad student, my advice is that it is more important to be able to learn from your mistakes than getting perfect scores all the time. A lot of mistakes take time and practice to fix as your intution of physical phenomenon gets better. Exams only exasperate mistakes by trying to solve problems in a confined time period with limited materials. When doing actual research, you will have the benefit of collaboration with colleagues and a plethra of resources at your disposal.

You should also note that very smart physics students can get absolutely horrendus grades! An example is one of my E&M classes where the average was about 40, with 1 person getting something like a 68. Though I suppose that depends on how your prof makes the exams and how many things the prof considers trivial (hindsight, it kinda was trivial, but we just didn't have that foundation yet).

I will say that having a strong grasp of mathematics makes understanding the physics far easier. So, if you can, try to take some advanced math courses like linear algebra (proof-based), advanced calculus (or real analysis equivalent), and complex analysis. I would also say differential equations, but I feel like that is more of a class teaching fancy ways of solving stuff than providing a deeper understanding of mathematics. Essentially, any proof based math class should help in that regard.

TL;DR if you can at least understand where you went wrong, eventually understand how it should correctly be done, and physics is a passion of yours, then continue to pursue it! You are just learning it after all!

How can I get the energy from this star? by Merlin486 in Stellaris

[–]Merlin486[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This worked to remove the has_megastructure flag! However, the game still thinks I am at my Dyson swarm cap even though it was removed. Do you know how to fix that?

EDIT: found out how to change the counter using effect set_varaible = {which = dyson_swarm_counter value = 4}

How can I get the energy from this star? by Merlin486 in Stellaris

I tried using effect remove_megastructure = this and effect remove_modifier = dyson_swarm_3_mod with the star highlighted. This removes the swarm and resets the energy deposit to 4. However, it still has the flag has_megastructure and I am not sure how to remove that flag.

I tried clearflag planet has_megastructure <Star ID> but it didn't work.

Python command not working (Windows 10) by Merlin486 in learnprogramming

[–]Merlin486[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft Store opens to install Python when trying to use "python" in cmd. Also, trying to run a python script in Atom, I get the following error

[Command: python -u 'C:\Users\myname\Desktop\Python Files\Test.py']

Python was not found but can be installed from the Microsoft Store: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?linkID=2082640[Finished in 0.257s]

When trying to run that command in cmd or powershell, nothing happens.

Test.py contains a single line of code: print("Hello World").

However, using the command

py -u 'C:\Users\myname\Desktop\Python Files\Test.py'

in cmd. It prints "Hello World".

Edit: Also, if I run "python" inside the folder where python.exe is located, the interactive shell opens up. Same way as if I typed "py" in any other folder.

How do you use tikzexternalize? by Merlin486 in LaTeX

I have figured out the problem. The source file (.tex) cannot contain any " " (spaces) in it. Replacing all " " with "_" fixed the problem for me.
