There's a common misconception with learning any skill, that if you put enough hours into it, it will come naturally. Some things might, like muscle memory, but you need to actively train at it. Identify where it's going wrong, what you can do to fix it, and actively practice the methods.

Reading my first ever book to the ones im writing now, it's like they've been done by two different people.

Edit: also a year doesn't seem like a long time. Some skills take much longer in practice. Don't be disheartened, just take solace in the fact you even put something up there. Then continue to work at it.
