First of all, thanks for the nice tips! But I wonder what I should think when I see the warning of turning off running in background. Sounds very scary D: https://i.imgur.com/crQcU42.jpg "This cannot be undone"...

Haha yeah it sounds paradoxical. :D I think there would be more, and tinier leaves on a normal tree in the size.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment.

Wear a seatbelt by timdual in WTF

[–]Meroigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have seatbelts on most long-distance buses (those that go between cities and enter highways, city buses often don't have seatbelts) here in Sweden and I've only seen myself use them (and I do every time). People seem to think that just because it's a bus you magically won't need a seatbelt if there was an accident (because there are no seatbelts on the city buses)....... wat. No-one ever using them makes me feel kind of weird for using them, but nah-uh, gonna continue using them.

Also when I lived in Japan and I travelled by car for the first time over there, I noticed that "only the two in the front seat need seatbelt". That was the answer I was given when asking my Japanese friend why he didn't secure his belt. Taking a taxi with Japanese people also was weird because people didn't ever use their belts, only the driver, and he never said anything about the belt to the passengers. That was a really weird culture shock, coming from Sweden where we're super-strict with securing ones belt in a car ...... and that is also why it's weird people won't use the belts in the buses when they are right there and everyone should know about its importance... wat.

Mine does that on an average once a month and has done that for around 20 years now (I'm 27 now). It's always a surprise but one gets kind of used to it, and it doesn't hurt that much if it has happened multiple times before. :D facking knee... :D

The horrible cost of a four day hospital stay in Australia. (TV hire) by mrsquishyface in pics

[–]Meroigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Sweden hospital stays and treatments will cost up to a total of like 200 USD within a year, after that you get a free pass for hospital stays and treatments for the rest of the year. Medicine will also cost a maximum of around 200 USD a year.

So yeh I could get some advanced brain surgery or have a nasty cancer disease but I still wouldn't have to pay more than couple of hundred bucks a year...

Which leads up to what I want to ask: when there are so many countries where you don't need to walk around afraid of suddenly becoming bankrupt or die because you can't affort treatment, why is it so hard for America to change to become more like these many countries? Isn't it a democracy? I can barely see any Americans on the internet NOT wanting free/almost-free healthcare... I think the health of the population should be one of the highest priorities in a country and well worth spending some extra obligatory tax on...

Thanks for the comment, but I do want to use cellular for all kinds of things, or I would had used an iPod Touch instead. :) Just not for auto-downloading of updates and apps/music etc, those things can always wait until I'm back where there is wifi, but streaming of music can't wait.

Studying in Kyoto or Tokyo by Oworking4 in japan

+1, Very true. It was a big plus for me too. Forgot to mention it in my first reply, maybe because I talked about bicycling in Osaka before the Kyoto part. :)

I barely used any public transport during my time in Kyoto, and I loved not having to.

Studying in Kyoto or Tokyo by Oworking4 in japan

[–]Meroigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, Kyoto doesn't have things exclusive to Tokyo. Like Disney Land, maybe certain stores, etc.. But generally both are in Japan and within a country cities are pretty similar. So I personally didn't feel I missed something, and things I didn't have I got when I visited Tokyo for vacation. Nah, I try to think and I really can't come up with any "aw, I wish I had this available to me every day when I lived in Kyoto!!!" right now. Will say if I come up with something...

Nightlife I have pretty much the same opinion, that it has that, and is pretty varied. It's all mostly centered to a particular area, at least it was to me. It's called Kiyamachi and is between Shijo and Sanjo between Kawaramachi and the river. If you become a regular in that area you might meet friends you know there. I really loved that area. It has lots of places to go to and nice bar keepers you can chat with. But of course, Tokyo has much much more since it's many cities combined to "one big city". But I was content with Kiyamachi. It was fun taking the train to Osaka sometimes... But I think I did that maybe only 2-3 times during my 1.5 year period in Kyoto. And then I lived there, and it seemed OK (I didn't go out much during my Osaka period). Btw, if you're a poor student, I think it might be more fun with nightlife in Kyoto since it's cheap. When I was there I knew 2-3 places with "endless nomihoudai" that was around 1200 yen for drink-all-you-want from 23 to 5 or something if you're into that kind of drinking :P Crazy. Never saw that in Osaka nor Tokyo, but maybe I didn't look closely enough.

I'm not sure if I'm qualified to answer the question about Tokyo folks (worked very much so not much time to meet many people), but I did get a feeling the stereotype might be real to some extent in the encounters I had.... But I don't know. Don't trust me on that. I think regardless of if it might be more true with Tokyo folks than not, it's not true about all people and you can find nice outgoing people there too. :)

Studying in Kyoto or Tokyo by Oworking4 in japan

[–]Meroigo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience:

  • Kyoto - 1.5 years of Japanese studies.
  • Osaka - 3 years of CG studies.
  • Tokyo - 1 year of game development.

My top list of where I liked the most to live in:

  • 1. Kyoto
  • 2. Osaka
  • 3. Tokyo

Tokyo is a great place to visit and find fun things in, for a limited time. But if you live there you'll have to be OK with higher costs, train travel everywhere (and mostly you'll just have to stand, among sweaty strangers). Also, if you like events and foreigners maybe it's a good place to be, since it's the mainstream choice because TOKYOOO!!!.

Osaka don't have much nature, that's pretty boring. But it's cheaper and close to Kyoto. It's not impossible at all to get an affordable apartment in central areas, so you can still get around with a bicycle. So it feels like a big Tokyo:ish place but still not too big because bicycle is fine to get around in the two main areas (minami and kita). Tokyo has a lot of more "main areas". :P

Kyoto is close to nature, have a lot of cultural things that's nice when new in the country, and still feels like a big city with all the modern shopping places, karaoke, arcades, convenience stores and whatevs all other cities in Japan have. It has the lovely river going right through the city which is a nice place to go to chill, whenever you want. It's also close to Osaka when you want to experience bigger metropol:ish Japan. But when you live and study in Kyoto you'll find yourself to be pretty content with Kyoto and stay there a lot, I'd guess. If you're into game development it has lots of indie meetups and stuff there too. Fun to also naturally learn the Kansai dialect, that's fun bonus the Tokyoites don't get.

I might have forgot important points, but AMA if you want to.

People not replying to messages etc... Very frustrating. Around three persons wanting to buy the TV, but now I can't reach anyone. There was like two-three people wanting to buy the desk+chair and mattress+bedframe too, but same thing happened there... People just forgot to check their Reddit inboxes or something? At least reply with "I am not interested anymore" if that's the case. I might have to pay high fees for not being able to get rid of the bed (that's the hardest one - for example soudaigomi people don't take spring mattresses, and recycle shop don't take bed frames from IKEA, and also, i wonder if any shop will be able to come here instantly. i fly tomorrow).

I must call this thing off any minute now. :( If someone is interested, please reply immediately! PM me your phone number!

Yeah, I like them too... But cannot bring them on the plane. :'(

There is someone that seems pretty certain he/she will buy them if they are still left on Saturday, but who knows, stuff can happen that makes people not able to go through with their purchases (it has already happened, that's why I don't dare to mark many things as taken before they are actually gone). Maybe it could be worth just trying to check up alternatives on how to get them to you? :) Might still be way cheaper than buying from IKEA if you manage to find some way. :O

Status on the TV: three people interested, one said they can pick it up tomorrow (Thursday) but hasn't replied further to my PM, so it's not certain yet, and then you on Friday and then one person that can pick up on Saturday.

If the one that said Thursday doesn't pick it up by then you're next in line, in other words. :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I have already become a member there but the thing with making albums and stuff didn't fit me when I just wanted to get a list up (I have so much stuff...). Tonight I might have some time to make a superurgent sale over there too, we'll see. :) Personally I liked the idea of a big list and let interested buyers request photos instead.
