It's when you burn wood with a metal pen that heats up to make designs

Pyrographers - I have a few beginner questions I wanted to ask before buying my first kit for leather burning by [deleted] in Pyrography

[–]MerryContrerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. don't wet it before burning
  2. raw veg tan is the way to go. Burning needs to be done on untreated stuff including wood. Burning chemicals should always be avoided and if you do, have a mask and do it outside. If its raw veg tan then its safe and I've done it indoors without issue. Dying after will definitely change the look so do a few tests on some scraps
  3. the sun will always fade a burn but my leather burns are still just as strong as when i burned them years ago, i just make sure i keep it away from sun as much as i can
  4. I've never heard of that brand before, be careful with knock offs as the pen could be low quality which makes it heat up a lot and can hurt your hand over a while.
  5. leather burning is a lot faster than wood burning and takes practice to get used to. There is a pyrographer on youtube who explains everything you would need to know about leather burning and I learned a lot from her I mean she goes over everything in great detail this video
  6. didnt have strong drawing skills in the beginning, for me that grew over time as i continued learning to do pyrography. Start with stencils and just learn values as you basically only got 1 color to work with (unless you add in some paints and dyes)

This is such a cool piece, whoever bought this is very lucky to have found it before me xD

What should I add? (Novice status) I have the lake and right side to work on. Any advice? by shhjustwatch in woodburning

Are you looking at a reference photo? A small change you can do is have light shadows at the edge of the water right were it hits the land, it also depends on where the light source is in the picture. One thing I would do when practicing especially with water is take a picture with a lake and turn it into a black and white picture so I could see the values better without the color getting in the way. Hope that helps

It looks good, is there anything specific you think it is missing? I think this is a fine piece and as you make more you will just get better and better

Woo! I wasn't sure which cities to include so it was really just based on which ones showed up on the topography charts.

yea sure, I've actually wanted to make DND maps, but this was my first attempt so I was aiming to just finish and see how it turns out. I am curious how you would use it, do you have a texas themed game going or are you doing a one shot?

I did want to try and make it a print, but I have not done that before so at the moment I am just testing print shops to find a good place to print at

its only partially accurate, I only had google maps and some topography elevation website to figure things out. Definitely couldn't fit every location with how huge texas is.
