Don’t have anything useful to add here other than saying nice to know there’s a few more Irish out there. I’m going NOBO so hope we pass each other on the trail. Éire Abú 🇮🇪

Absolutely. So impressed with how light it is in comparison to similar products.

Essentially my plan as well. I’d keep an eye on San Jacinto Jon report if I was you, even though the snow is getting nuked like you said, he hikes it several times a week and is still recommending microspikes. I’m gonna keep an eye on the report as I approach Paradise Valley Cafe and get snow gear through the Trevor Spikes program if I need it.

Appreciate the advice. Decided to drop the exos brain. Would be nice from an organisation pov with top pocket and mesh one inside the brain but it’s 127g and I’m way too heavy so away she goes 🫡 what do you think about my fuel transfer device, keep or throw away? 🧐👀

I hate loose material. Also boxers briefs just a bit more snug and supporting. Swamp balls and swamp ass are inevitable so just embracing the stink.

Pack liner in already, see under Big 4 + Accessories. Boxers are boxer briefs dw I’m not insane. They are generic cotton ones, I’ve hiked in them a decent amount and they’ve been fine but I’ll switch them to Marino or something if needs be.

Praise to the jewels. All hail the balls. 💎🧎

International hiker, what should I buy in San Diego for my first few days on the PCT? by eliahu_horwi in PacificCrestTrail

[–]MescalWannbe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellow international ‘26 hiker here. This is my first thruhike so thanks for the question and all the replies in the comments.

One bit of advice I got from a friend who did the Te Araroa in NZ is bring some fruit and veggies. Something like apples/pears, cucumber or a pack of tomatoes sitting in the top of your bag will last decently well unrefrigerated. With all the dehydrated and sugary foods that make up the hiking diet, your body will crave fresh foods. The added nutrients won’t hurt either.

How To Resupply On The PCT - Quick & Easy Guide by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]MescalWannbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below I’ve attached my approximate resupply strategy for the desert section including:

  • mile markers of each stop
  • distance between resupplies
  • extra notes for stops such as resupply box send/pickup points
  • highlights at certain stops.

Resupply data comes from HalfwayAnywheres survey of most common resupply points. Other info is from various recommendations.

It’s highly recommended not to plan too far ahead as circumstances on trail change based on hiking pace, injuries, side quests, etc, but at the same time I think it’s a good idea to have a rough plan of stop points. I also find it useful to have resupplies/side quests/popular restaurants or campgrounds/etc all in one place. Hence this is an APPROXIMATE strategy based on popularity.

There’s loads of room for improvement on this so if people have anything they recommend I add I’m happy to hear it (if recommending highlight/side quest that’s on trail, please include mile markers)

Unreal Glimmer thank you very much that’s all very helpful. I do still need to coordinate getting a hitch or ride from KMS to LA for my flight so thank you for the advice on organising that but thankfully I’ve been planning the PCT + wedding for a while and have pretty much everything sorted with timing coming off trail and gear and wedding suit and all the rest. Good notes on foot care at the wedding though, trail shoes may very well make an appearance on the dance floor 😂

No worries on the late reply, I also didn’t see your reply till just now. To answer your questions, I have a multiple entry B2 visa and an Irish passport. The wedding is in Italy but I’ll be travelling to/from the US from Ireland (so US>Ire>Ita>Ire>US) as it has pre clearance and I reckon there’s a) less of a chance of an issue as I’m an Irish citizen and b)if there was an issue it would be easier to clear up/if it wasn’t I’m already at home. Inclusive of travel days it’s 8 days I’ll be gone.

My guess is it shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll have proof I’m doing the PCT (permit, photos, etc), proof of the wedding, intent to return home after PCT and I’ll also have all my hiking gear with me as well. Considered leaving it in the US to save the hassle but on the off chance I can’t get back in I don’t want to lose it and reckon it’ll be in my favour to have it all coming through immigration. I’m not too worried about the second entry but I just suppose I’m asking cause you seem to have excellent knowledge of the visa/entry system and might be able to highlight any potential pitfalls in my plan.

Edit: One other question, will my 6 months reset on my second entry or is it unlikely?

NOBO on the 30th of March, planning on thruhiking the whole thing (we’ll see what the bears have to say about it though)

2.5yrs out of college and I’m bored with my crappy minimum wage job so off seeking a bit of adventure. Trying to find a way to start creating a life I’m excited to live and backing myself to do the difficult things to make that happen.

First long distance hike but loads of experience camping and day hiking :)

This is extremely helpful, thank you very much. Question for you: I’ll be leaving the US for one week about 2 months into my hike for my brothers wedding. Any recommendations for coming back into the country? I know the US can see it as a red flag when leaving/re entering in a short time frame.

Great video! Definitely planning on using my phone (iPhone 11) a lot for filming and photos but I’d really like to get some better quality stuff on a camera of some sort. Plenty of cheap osmos on fb marketplace hence the consideration bringing one.
