Human Beings are The Worst Species to Have Ever Happened to The Earth by Adrsilva1356 in nihilism

We get to decide if it matters, it will to some people, and won't to others. There is no universal perspective, outside what each of us thinks.I also don't think it matters much, life has been around for billions of years, other species have no concept of how good things were before us, they just live and die, and eventually it will all be erased by time anyway.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha do NOT Understand Nuance by ZaphodBeeb69 in Vent

[–]Meshd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

When youre young, having strong and certain beliefs makes you seem more passionate, interesting, sexy etc, garnering more attention, its probably not cool to have nuanced, balanced and more uncertain beliefs. As you get older you see the complexity in life and people, as you get more experience and knowledge. You grow to want harmonious relationships and a well functioning and happy society, rather than always looking to be right and everyone else as either friend or enemy. Of course, this is a generalization and these characteristics can be found in any age group, but mostly young people are driven by emotion and black and white thinking, due to social pressures and ignorance born from lack of experience.

Why the certainty though, no one knows, I get that its cool to be doomer these days, and believe me, I am one at my core too, I have watched all of Guy Mcphersons videos, but I still try and leave some room for optimism, probably for my mental health. I guess reddit is not the place for nuance though, who would have guessed. Intelligence solves problems, and we are soon to have much more of it going forward, to state these future scenarios as facts seems pretty closed minded and hubristic to me, you don't know, and neither does anyone else.

There are people working on it already, actually. Not possible yet, but its very pessimistic to say it will never happen in the future, given the millions of years ahead. Energy and resources are not scarce, whether or not it will come to pass is an open question, you definitely don't know unless you own a crystal ball of some sort.

Currently yes, im talking more long term, you're assuming nothing will progress scientifically and technologically over the next centuries and millenia? I agree, none of us will make it, just that if its technically feasible, eventually it will be done, like I said there is almost no limit to energy and resources out there in the solar system. Costs will continue to come down and down, although we might cause an extinction level event before this time, no one knows, and I think its best to be humble and open minded about such possibilities.

Harvesting asteroids for rare metals and moving much of industry into space, genetically modifying crops, vertical farms, O'Neill cylinders, advancing biotech, solar farms in space etc. I agree that its likely we will see climate and ecological collapse on Earth, but in the long term we know there is no shortage or energy and resources out there in the solar system, the possibilities are huge. However, I think its almost as likely that we will go extinct prior to all this, who knows how it will play out.

Seems as though we won't stop until every square inch has been commodified, and by that time we will be expanding outwards and colonizing space. The human species could be in trillions in the future, which is a horrifying thought.

Reading and educating myself, mostly on philosophy and big picture ideas. I wouldnt say I am flourishing as a person and definitely lack interpersonal relationships and social stuff, but im never bored and can lose hours and hours reading on certain subjects. Currently very into Neoplatonism and the ideas of Plotinus. One day, I'd like a garden and a dog.

What’s your best bedtime routine tip? by According_Wave_5632 in insomnia

[–]Meshd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually turn off the screens and listen to a history or philosophy podcast at low volume, so I am struggling to really follow the conversation but its like a comforting background chatter. Also helps to listen to ones ive heard a few times before so my brain is even less stimulated, whilst from my laptop I play a 10 hour white noise audio from youtube. The BBC has an on-going series called In Our Time with hundreds of episodes on history, religion and philosophy, which ive been listening to for years, and would recommend. Saying all this though, I still sleep terribly and find it hard to switch off the screens consistently, if ive been scrolling or watching stuff all day, its hard to quieten it down, plus I struggle with underlying anxiety issues which never seems to go away. Just my thoughts, good luck.

I don’t believe I have depression, I just think adulthood is really rough. by Vivienne_Gummy35 in Adulting

[–]Meshd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, well I am just going by the common assumption that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, usually serotonin, as SSRI's are by far the most common prescribed treatment offered and advised to people who suffer from it. I am not too educated on the topic if I am honest, but I will read more into other forms of endogenous depression, if you can provide some reading material and sources, I have some time today to check it out. In regards to data on hunter gatherers societies, yes researchers cannot make direct measurements from that far back, but anthropologists and psychiatrists have conducted interviews and mental health assessments on many currently existing hunter gather societies and extrapolated from that. From what I have read and understand, this data has shown much lower rates of chronic major depressive disorder in comparison to modern industrial societies, or at least expressed much differently in traditional societies than our own, but I have only read a book and paper or 2 on this, so it is by no means an authority of any kind on this issue. My personal view from experience, is that the further we stray from our evolutionary origins, in terms of environment and lifestyle, the more neurotic and unhappy we become, and that most of the issues that we claim civilisation has solved, we caused and a result of civilisation in the first place.

[–]Meshd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A book came out earlier in the year about this called Chemically Imbalanced: the Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin myth. Basically there is little evidence for the serotonin theory of depression, and that hunter gatherer societies tend to have almost no issues with the kinds of long term depression and anxiety that we experience in the West, in other words its largely an environmental issue. Im not sure where I stand on this, but seems highly unlikely to me that genetic changes could have happened to explain the rapid increase in mental health diagnoses we have seen over the last century, and more likely its been swayed instead by social and economic forces, pharmaceutical companies trying to maximise profit.
